Bandipora – as new district going polls first time, has three segments 1,86,069 voters

JAMMU, Oct 23: The newly-created district of Bandipora comprising three constituencies of Gurez, Bandipora and Sonawari is going to polls on November 17th 2008 during the first phase of the Assembly polls. The total electorate that will exercise their right to vote is 1,86,069, which includes 96,848 male and 89,221 female voters. The total number of polling stations in these three constituencies is 237 this time compared to 184 in 2002.

GUREZ –
Gurez constituency was carved out on 27th April 1995 in pursuance of J&K Representation of People’s Act, 1957. The total number of electorate in this constituency for 2008 elections is 15,330 comprising 8,006 male and 7,324 female voters. The total number of polling stations in the constituency is 25. This Assembly constituency was won by Mr. Nazir Ahmad of NC in 2002 election, who polled 5,782 votes defeating his nearest rival Mr. Faqir Mohammad, an independent candidate, by 1,250 votes. Mr. Faqir Mohammad polled 4,532 votes. While as the total votes polled were 10,817, the poll percentage recorded in 2002 elections stood at 76.48.

Mr. Faqir Mohammad, an independent candidate, first represented the constituency in 1996 elections.

BANDIPORA-
This Assembly constituency has 86,013 registered electorate for the coming 2008 elections, which includes 45,120 male and 40,893 female voters. The constituency had 70,963 registered voters in 2002. The total number of polling stations in the constituency is 111 as compared to 91 in 2002 election. The Bandipora Assembly segment was won by Usman Majid of JKAL in 2002 securing 5,722 votes out of 22,179 votes polled. Mr. Usman defeated his nearest rival Mr. Habibullah Bhat of the INC by a margin of 253 votes. While Mr. Bhat polled 5,469 votes, the overall poll percentage in 2002 was 31.25.
The constituency (Bandipora, Gurez) was represented by NC candidate Mr. Abdul Kabir Khan both in 1957 and 1962 while as Mr. Mohammad Anwar Khan of the Congress won the 1967 and 1972 Assembly elections. In 1977 and 1983, NC candidate Mr. Mohammad Khalil was declared elected from this constituency. In 1987 and 1996 Assembly elections, Bandipora constituency was represented by Mr. Ghulam Rasool Mir of the NC.

SONAWARI-
Sonawari is the third constituency of the newly-created Bandipora district having 84,726 registered voters including 43,722 male and 41,004 female voters for 2008 elections. In comparison, there were 78,299 voters for the 2002 elections. The total number of polling stations in the constituency is 101 as compared to 72 in 2002. Mr. Mohammad Akbar Lone of NC won the Assembly constituency in 2002 elections when he defeated his nearest rival Mr. Mohammad Yousuf Parrey of JKAL by a margin of 12,758 votes. Mr. Lone polled 25,687 votes out of 44,246 total votes polled while as Mr. Parrey polled 12,929 votes. The total poll percentage was recorded at 56.50.
In 1957, Sonawari constituency was represented by NC candidate Mr. Abdul Khaliq Bhat. Mr. Abdul Kabir Bhat won the Assembly elections as an NC candidate. While Mr. Abdul Aziz Parrey won the 1967 and 1972 elections from Sonawari on a Congress ticket, in 1977 he was elected from Sonawari as an NC candidate. In 1983 polls, this Assembly segment was represented by Mr. Ghulam Rasool Bahar while as Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Kuchay was elected from here in 1987. Mr. Mohammad Yousuf Parrey, an independent candidate, won from here in 1996.
