Kuldeep Verma’s wife joins BJP
10/23/2008 11:52:46 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 23: Within a week of election announcement, it did not come as a surprise as the BJP today announced a “shot in the arm” with joining of a new entrant in the party.
Shilpi Verma, wife of Kuldeep Verma, who had died after allegedly consuming poison during the Amarnath Yatra agitation has joined BJP to, what she described as, “carrying forward her husband’s agenda”.
The decision was announced by BJP’s state president Ashok Khajuria and the national coordinator RP Singh in a hurriedly called press conference here this afternoon. In last several years, this was perhaps first press conference of BJP held in a luxury hotel instead of the party headquarters.
It may be mentioned here that the BJP has been making all out efforts to cash in on the Amarnath land row agitation with its Swabhimaan rallies.
BJP got short in the arm when Shilpi Verma the wife of martyr Kuldeep Verma (Dogra), who sacrificed his life for the cause of Amarnath land transfer, today formally joined the Bhartiya Jant party in presence of National Coordinator and incharge J&K state RP Singh at Jammu.
Sources claimed that Shipli Verma will be the party candidate from Bishnah Constituency but the BJP office bearers refused to confirm this. It is pertinent to mention here that after the two month long agitation over Amarnath land Controversy Shilpi received enormous sympathy of the people of Jammu in general and people of Bishnah in particular.
While talking to the media persons soon after joining the party she said that she will work for the strengthening the party and will campaign for it also in the elections. She further added that her husband laid down his life for a genuine cause and ‘I will fight for the rights of the people of Jammu’. On being asked whether she will accept mandate of BJP for contesting elections from Bishnah, pat came the reply that ‘she said has not joined party for mandate but to strengthen the nationalist forces in the state’.
Earlier Ashok Khajuria State president BJP welcomed Shipli Verma on joining BJP and expressed his gratitude towards her.
Khajuria when asked about party mandate to Shilpi said that it was too early to say anything on this issue and added that other candidates, whose names have not been announced so far, will be announced shortly.
RP Singh National Coordinator stated that selection process of the party candidates was going on and the next list would be announced after October 31.
Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, Dr. Nirmal Singh, Yudheveer Sethi, Ajay Jamwal and Balbir Ram were also present on the occasion.
