| SDP wants polls stayed, pleads before SC | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 24: Socialistic Democratic Party has approached Supreme Court of India to stay the election process in Jammu and Kashmir. The Party president filed a writ petition under Article 32 of the Constitution in the Apex court for directing the Election Commission of India to postpone elections in the militancy ravaged state in view of present situation in the valley. The party president Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi contended in the petition that the Election Commission has ignored the ground realities in the state while deciding about the election schedule in Jammu and Kashmir. Reaffirming faith in the fairness of the constitutional process and the powerful democratic set up in the country, the party president said that due to some ugly developments the polity of the state has been polarized during the last four months She said that the conduct of election at the present juncture may prove counter productive and further widen the gulf of alienation that exists in Kashmir valley. The party cautioned that with atmosphere still surcharged in the valley, the credibility of elections may also be questioned as apparently it seems that the voting percentage in the valley may not be much. |
