| Ganderbal –New district’s first tryst with polls; two segments, 1.37 lakh voters | | Tour across constituencies IV | | The newly created Ganderbal district, comprising two Assembly segments of 16-Kangan and 17-Ganderbal, will go to polls on 23rd November, 2008 in the second phase of J&K Assembly elections . The total electorate exercising franchise in polls is 1,37,495. Of these, 71,336 are male and 66,159 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up in the district is 142 as compared to 127 in 2002 elections. The total number of electorate in 2002 elections was 1,18,848. 16-Kangan The total electorate registered for 2008 elections from this constituency is 59,879. Of these, 31,354 are male and 28,525 female voters. The number of registered electorate in 2002 elections in this constituency was 50,446. Sixty-three polling stations are being established in 2008 Assembly elections, as compared to 58 in 2002 elections. The constituency was represented by Mr. Mian Altaf Ahmad of National Conference (NC) in 2002. He got elected from this constituency by defeating Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Dar of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by a margin of 11,039 votes. While Mr. Altaf secured 16,987 votes, Mr. Dar received 5,948 votes out of 26,249 votes polled overall. The poll percentage was recorded at 52.03. The constituency was represented by Mian Nizam-ud-Din of NC in 1957 and 1962 and then by Mian Bashir Ahmad of Congress in 1967 and 1972. Mian Bashir Ahmad again won from here as NC candidate in 1977 while as Sheikh Abdul Jabbar of NC was elected from this constituency in 1983. Mian Altaf Ahmad was elected from this constituency in 1987 and 1996 Assembly elections on NC ticket. 17-Ganderbal – The total electorate registered for 2008 elections from this constituency is 77,616. of these, 39,982 are male and 37,634 female voters. The number of polling stations to be established for 2008 elections is 79 as against 69 in 2002 elections. The number of voters in the constituency in 2002 was 68,402. The constituency was represented by Qazi Mohammad Afzal of PDP in 2002 elections. He won the seat defeating his NC rival Mr. Omar Abdullah by a margin of 2,870 votes. Mr. Qazi secured 11,622 votes as compared to 8,752 polled by Mr. Abdullah. The total number of votes polled was 24,081. The poll percentage was 35.20. Ganderbal constituency was represented by Mr. Ghulam Ahmad Sofi of NC in 1957. Mr. Abdul Salam Aitu, again of NC, was elected in 1962. While Mr. Mohammad Maqbool Bhat won this seat as a Congress candidate in 1967, he again won from Ganderbal in 1972 on NC ticket. Mr. Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah of NC was elected from this constituency in 1977. In 1983, 1987 and 1996 Assembly elections, this constituency was represented by Dr. Farooq Abdullah. |
