| Pakistan, India top traffickers in women | | Human traficking is third most lucrative business | | B L KAK NEW DELHI, SEPT. 12: Human trafficking has been universally confirmed as the third most lucrative illicit busines in the world--indeed, after arms and drugs. And human trafficking has already become as a major source of organised crime revenue. In plain language, human traffricking is considered as the industry, which generates an estrimated 7 billion dollars ro 12 billion dollars annually. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), traffickers net an additional 32 billion dollars a year once the victims are in the destination country. Pakistan has been listed as one of the key source of trafficking of women in a United Nations report. The report says that India has emerged as a key destination and transit point for global trafficking of women and girls. Besides India, other sources of human trafficking are: Pakistan, Thailand, China and Cambodia. According to the United Nations Population Fund report ‘State of World Population’, India and Pakistan are major destinations for trafficked women and girls and also transit points into the Middle East. In the South Asia, illegal trading of children is “an extension of a serious child labour problem, which includes exploitation of girls for domestic work”, the report says. Southeast Asia and South Asia are home to the largest number of internationally trafficked people, an estimated 2.5 million and 1.5 million respectively. ================== |
