PCB to record festival pollution

JAMMU, Oct 25: In order to monitor level of sound and air pollution during Diwali celebrations the state pollution control department has set up at least 20 monitoring stations to record sound level and three centres to monitor air pollution across Jammu city.
A senior officer of the state pollution control department said that to record the level of sound and air pollution the state pollution control department has set to up 20 monitoring stations between Satwari and Amphalla and three air pollution centres to record data of pollutants.
He said the department would monitor pollution level over a period of five days to draw conclusions. "We will monitor the pollution level two days before and after the diwali", the pollution control board official said.
The pollution control board official said every year during diwali air and noise pollution go up despite awareness campaign by the several non-government orgnisations to minimise use of high decibel crackers. He said our environment gets polluted due to excessive use of high decibel crackers.
He said diwali is a festival of lights and residents should stick to use to crackers which do not cause pollution.He said the department of pollution control board from time to time organise awareness campaigns and workshops to educate masses about the ill effects of bursting crackers.
Several schools in Jammu city organised education programmes to spread awareness with regard to non-use of crackers. Environmentalists worry rampant use of high decibel crackers during diwali season adversely affect atmosphere and spread pollution which is harmful for human population.
Meanwhile, the stockists and retailers engaged in the business of selling crackers said that this year the market is dull .He said the crackers are too costly and most of the people feeling the pinch of high inflation and market crash. A retailer who has set up shop in Parade ground said the customers are shying away from purchasing costly crackers and have fixed budget.
