| Baiting in political circles has begun | | | NIRBHAY JAMMUAL
With the Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir drawing near baiting has begun within the political parties in the state.It is not only baiting by one political party for activists and leaders belonging to the other parties but efforts are on for hooking new faces,even if they have no political background.For instance the BJP succeeded in enrolling Shilpa, wife of Kuldeep Verma,who was the first person to die while agitating against the revocation of the land order.Though the BJP leaders besides Shilpa herself made it clear that she would not contest the election but campaign for the BJP candidates inside reports revealed that if Shilpa was a voter and a state subject she may be given the party mandate for contesting the election from Bishna constituency.Earlier the BJP persuaded a number of muslims in Jammu and Udhampur districts to join the saffron party.This is not the end.The BJP leadership is trying to bring more political leaders and prominent citizens in its fold.
The Congress has been trying to hook Yashpal Sharma,who had resigned from the party after he was not given the mandate for contesting the bypoll in Poonch about a year ago.Sharma had,a few months ago,joined the PDP.As he continued to receive feelers from the Congress he visited Srinagar recently and had a meeting with the PDP patron,Mufti Mohd.Sayeed,in order to seek an assurance that he would get the PDP ticket.Sharma is a former legislator and continues to be potential political leader in Poonch and as such the Mufti had no reason to drop him like a pebble.Sharma has received assurance from the PDP.But nothing is permanent in political combinations.Well the Congress has been eyeing a number of political leaders belonging to the National Conference and the PDP with the sole aim of reducing the strength of these two regional parties.In the ame way the National Conference has been trying to lure people from the PDP and the Congress.The PDP does not want to remain a silent spectator.Its main aim is to hook political activists from the National Conference and in this context it had made inroads in the National Conference base in Poonch,Rajouri and Doda districts.TheNational Conference hit the jackpot when it suceeded in luring former BSP Chief Yashpal Bhagat.Bhagat may be the NC candidate from Bishna.
Jammu Kashmir Democratic Party,led by Ghulm Hassan Mir,is waiting for the disgruntled leaders belonging to the PDP,the National Conference and the Congress,who would be denied tickets,to join him.Well baiting during the pre-election period does not invite any constitutional penalty.It is during this period that political leaders are free to join or rejoin one organisation or the other because they know that such turn-coat attitude will not invite any disqualification under the anti-defection law.It was this law that forced Dilawar Mir and Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari to contest fresh bypoll after they were disqualified from the membership of the Assembly on the charge of defecting from the National Conference to the PDP.In the proces Mir got reelected to the Assembly but the Molvi lost the battle of the ballot.Having been elected as vicepresident of the PDP he had to be rehabilitated by the Mufti who saw to it that he got elected to the Legislative Council.So be prepared for witnessing Aaya Ram Gaya Ram picture tll the end of polling. |
