| Javed for de-silting, embankments on river Jehlum | | | Srinagar, September 12 –Minister of State for Rural Development and Science and Technology Mr Javed Mustafa Mir has asked the concerned to explore possibility of raising the embankments of the river Jehlum as also carrying out its de-silting wherever necessary to prevent recurrence of over flowing of the river due to rains and floods. He said this can help to a large extent minimize damages caused to the residential and other structures besides, crops in areas on either side of the river. The Minister who today inspected the site of breach on the embankment of the river Jehlum at Gundabul in Srinagar said that government is alive to problems and several measures were taken to provide timely relief to the people affected due to recent floods. He said the need is to formulate both short and long term measures to check recurrence of floods as also conserve water bodies and resources. During interaction with the people at various places, the Minister listened to their problems and assured of all possible assistance. He directed the PDD and PHE authorities to take immediate steps to completely restore power and water supply in Gundabul and adjoining areas. He directed for improving sanitation in the area. The Minister who also visited Gundabul, Soitang, Pathshahi bagh Lasjan and other flood affected areas of Chadoora constituency asked the engineer accompanying him to raise bunds and retaining walls on khuls. He asked the people at Padshahi bagh to voluntarily remove plants, trees and other structures inside the river so that its glory is restored. Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr Reyaz Ahmad Kamli and senior engineers of PHE and PDD also accompanied the Minister. |
