Srinagar -5.57 lakh voters, 8 constituencies; polling in last phase

Srinagar district, comprising 8 Assembly constituencies of Hazaratbal, Zadibal, Iddgah, Khanyar, Habakadal, Amirakadal, Sonawar and Batmaloo, is going to polls on 24th December, 2008 in the seventh and final phase of J&K Assembly elections. The total electorate registered for 2008 elections in the district is 5,57,265. Of these, 2,88,984 are male and 2,68,281 are female voters. The total polling booths being set up in the district for the electoral exercise is 682. In 2002, the total voters in the district in 2002 elections were 6,05,255 excluding the constituencies of Kangan and Ganderbal which now form the newly created district of Ganderbal. The total number of polling stations set up in 2002 elections for these 8 constituencies was 631.

HAZARATBAL
The total number of electorate in Hazratbal constituency for 2008 elections is 82,675 out of which 42,930 are male and 39,745 are female voters. The total number of polling stations is 110 as compared to 95 in 2002 Assembly polls.
This Assembly constituency was won by Mr. Mohammad Syed Akhoon of National Conference (NC) in 2002 defeating his nearest rival Mr. Gh. Mohi-ud-Din of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by a margin of 1,403 votes. While Mr. Akhoon polled 3,042 votes, Mr. Mohi-ud-Din received 1,639 votes. The total votes polled were 6,110 and poll percentage was recorded at 7.11.
The Hazratbal constituency has been represented all along by NC since 1952 till 2002. While Peer Yehya Shah Sadiqi won in 1957, 1962, and 1967 elections, Sofi Ghulam Ahmed won in 1972. Mr. Hissam-ud-Din Banday was elected in 1977 and 1983 elections from this constituency. This constituency was represented by Mr. Mohammad Yaseen Shah in 1987 and Mohammad Syed Akhoon in 1996 respectively.

ZADIBAL
The total electors for 2008 elections registered in the Zadibal constituency are 66,800. Of these, 34,565 are male and 32,235 are female voters. The total number of polling stations in the constituency for 2008 elections is 70 as compared to 65 in 2002.
The constituency was represented by Mr. Shahjahan Dar, an independent candidate, in 2002 Assembly elections. He won the seat by defeating his nearest rival Mr. Sadiq Ali of NC by a margin of 294 votes. While Mr. Dar polled 1,514 votes, Mr. Sadiq Ali polled 1,220. The total votes polled were 3,244 and the poll percentage recorded was 4.78.
Zadibal constituency was represented by NC candidates namely Mirwaiz Gh. Nabi, Shabir Mohammad Abdullah and Syed Abdullah in 1957, 1962 and 1967 Assembly polls respectively. In 1972, an independent candidate Mr. Saleem Anwar wrested the seat. This seat was continuously won by NC candidates Mr. Ghulam Ahmed Shunthu, Sheikh Ab. Rashid, Peer Mohammad Shafi and Sadiq Ali in 1977, 1983,1987 and 1996 Assembly elections.

IDDGAH
The third Assembly segment of district Srinagar is Iddgah in which 58,245 voters are eligible to vote in 2008 elections. Of these 30,370 are male and 27,875 female voters. The total number of polling stations polling stations to be installed in 2008 elections is 75 as against 70 in 2002.
Mr. Mubark Ahmed Gul of (NC) won election from this constituency in 2002 securing 2,026 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Mr. Mohammad Ashraf Bakshi, an independent candidate, by a margin of 1,279 votes. Mr. Bakshi polled 747 votes. The total votes polled were 3,342 and percentage of polling was 4.74.
20- Iddgah constituency, earlier known a Safakadal constituency till 1972, was represented by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad of NC in 1957, 1962 and 1967 Assembly elections. Mr. Abdul Rashid Kabli first won from here as an independent candidate in 1972 elections and again in 1977 elections as Janta Party candidate. Mr. Mubark Ahmed Gul of NC wrested this constituency in 1983 and won again in 1996 while as Mr. Mohammad Shafi Khan of NC was elected from Iddgah in 1987.

KHANYAR
This Assembly constituency has 53,842 registered electorate in 2008 elections. Of these, 28,086 are male and 25,756 female voters. The total polling stations for Khanyar constituency in 2008 elections is 82 as against 80 set up in 2002 elections.
Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar of NC won the seat in 2002 elections defeating his nearest Congress rival Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed by a margin of 2,741 votes. Mr. Sagar polled 2,868 votes and Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed 127, out of the 3,056 votes polled. The poll percentage was recorded at 4.21.
Except 1967 and 1972 Assembly elections when Ghulam Ahmad and Saif-ud-Din Qari won the Assembly seat on Congress tickets, NC has won the seat in all other Assembly elections. Mr. Abdul Rehman Bhat (1957), Gazi Abdul Rehman (1962), Mr. Abul Samad Teli (1977, 1983 & 1987) and Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar (1996) have represented the constituency as NC candidates.

HABAKADAL
This Assembly constituency has 51,391 registered electorate for the 2008 Assembly elections, out of which 26,325 are male and 25,066 female voters. Around 60 polling stations are being set up in the constituency for 2008 elections.
Mr. Raman Mattoo, independent candidate, was elected from this constituency in 2002 defeating his nearest BJP rival Mr. Hira Lal Gupta by a margin of 171 votes. Mr. Mattoo polled 587 and Mr. Gupta 416 votes of the total 2,062 votes polled. The percentage of polling was recorded at 3.08.
Mr. D.P. Dhar of NC represented this constituency in 1957and 1962 Assembly polls while as Shri Kant Koul of Congress got elected from here in 1967 elections. Mr. Gh. Mohammad Bhat, independent candidate, won from this constituency in 1972 elections. He was returned as NC candidate in 1977 and 1983. Mr. P.L. Handoo of NC represented this constituency in 1987 and 1996 Assembly elections.

AMIRAKADAL
The total electors registered in the constituency for 2008 elections are 75,488. Of these 38,936 are males and 36,552 female voters. The total polling stations being set up for 2008 elections is 85.
Mr. Mohammad Shafi Bhat of INC was elected from this constituency in 2002 polls defeating his NC rival Mr. Ghulam Nabi Mir by a margin of 491 votes. Mr. Bhat polled 1,163 votes and Mr. Mir 672 of the 2,280 votes polled in all. The poll percentage was recorded at 3.06. The total electorate in the constituency in 2002 elections was 74, 442.
Amirakadal constituency was represented by Sham Lal Saraf of NC in 1957 and 1962 Assembly elections. Mr. G.M. Sadiq of the Congress and Smt. Zainab Begum represented Amirakadal constituency in 1967 and 1972 Assembly elections respectively. Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Shah of NC was consecutively elected from this constituency in 1977, 1983, 1987 Assembly elections. Mr. Mohammad Shafi Bhat of NC won from Amirakadal constituency in 1996.

SONAWAR
The total registered voters that are expected to exercise their franchise from this constituency in 2008 elections are 66,065. Of these 34,313 are male and 31,752 female voters. The total number of polling stations in the constituency is 74, as against 69 in 2002 elections. The total number of voters in 2002 elections were 63,272.
Sonawar constituency was represented by Mr. Mohammad Yaseen Shah of NC in 2002. He defeated his nearest PDP rival Mr. Ghulam Hussain Wani by a margin of 1,705 votes. Mr. Shah polled 3,445 and Wani 1,740 votes. The total votes polled were 6,303 and the poll percentage was recorded at 9.96.
The constituency was carved out on 27th April 1995 and Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Bhawan of NC was elected from this constituency in 1996 on NC ticket.
25- Batmaloo
From this constituency, 1,02,759 voters are expected to exercise their right to vote in 2008 elections. Of these 53,459 are male and 49,300 female voters. The polling stations to be installed are 126 in comparison to 106 set up in 2002.
Mr. Gh. Mohi-ud-Din Shah of NC was elected from this constituency in 2002 elections defeating PDP candidate Mr.Tariq Hamid Qara by a margin of 842 votes. Mr. Shah polled 2,065 votes and Mr. Qarra 1,223. The total votes polled were 4,171 and poll percentage was recorded at 4.00.
Due to the demise of Mr. Shah, Batmaloo constituency went for a by-election and Mr. Tariq Hamid Qarra of PDP was elected from this constituency defeating Mr. Irfan Ahmad Shah of NC. This constituency was earlier known as Tankipora and was represented by Mr. G.M. Sadiq of NC in 1957 and 1962 Assembly polls. Mr. Noor Mohammad of Congress was elected from here in 1967 while as Mr. Ghulam Nabi Nowsheri of JMI won in 1972. Molvi Mohammad Yaseen Hamdani of NC represented Batmaloo in 1977. In 1983, Mr. Ali Mohammad (Zainakadal) of NC represented the constituency while as in 1987 elections this seat was won by Ali Mohammad Sagar of NC. Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah of NC won from here 1996.
