| Martyrdom day of Brig Rajinder Singh today | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 26: The J&K ex-services league is observing martyrdom day of Brig. Rajinder Singh, MVC, ‘Saviour of Kashmir’ on Oct 27. On the occasion, floral tributes will be paid to Late Brigadier by the Governor N. N Vohra, Lt. Gen. TK Sapru Maj. General D.L Choudhary, Col R.L Gangyal and retd. Maj. Gen Goverdhan Singh Jamwal. Late Brigadier, while obeying the orders of the Maharaja in letter and spirit he decided to be the last man and thus saved Kashmir. He was awarded first gallantry award of Independent India, The Maha Vir Chakra posthumously for his supreme sacrifice. The nation remembers him on this day and pays tribute to him and offers homage. Large number of citizens of Jammu including ex-servicemen from the villages will join to pay homage to him. His eldest daughter Urvashi Pathania will be present on the occasion. Brig. Rajinder Singh hailed from a small village Bagoona (now renamed as Rajinder Pura) of Tehsil Samba 30 Kms east of Jammu. After studying in his village school and Jammu he graduated from the Prince of Wales College now renamed as Gandhi Memorial Science College in 1921. He was commissioned in the J&K Stae Forces in June 1921. He became Birg in May 1942 commanded Jammu Brigade, Kashmir Brigade and took over as Chief of Staff J&K State forces from Maj Gen HL Scot, a British Officer on 24 Sep 1947. |
