| Defeat the common enemy | | | | Terrorism is though seen through different prisms and is understood under different perspectives but the world is gradually recognizing this menace is a common threat to human kind –all countries, all societies. India has been highly vulnerable to terrorism and most of this vicious infrastructure has been either directly funded or supported by Pakistan. Though, of late, we are witnessing the homegrown terrorism but majority of what all India has suffered has come as an import from the neighbour. For a couple of years Pakistan’s policies have started backfiring. Now Pakistan is among terror-vulnerable countries. Day in and day out the country is being bombed serially taking a huge toll of human life. In this backdrop when our Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh asked his Pakistani counterpart that terrorism is a common threat, he gave Islamabad an opportunity to correct its follies and make a joint bloc with India for fighting terror unitedly. Terrorism is a big problem before the world. During his address at seventh ASEM summit last weekend, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh also stressed on strengthening global cooperation to combat terrorism as this was essential to maintain sustainable development. Terrorism, extremism, and intolerance threaten our social cohesion," Singh said. Social values have got big challenges by the terrorist attacks in terrorism affected countries. We must bring perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terrorism to justice. There is need to form network to root out terrorism wherever it exists. He noted that unfortunately, the international community has not lived up to its commitments for technology transfer and additional financing since the Rio Conference. We should pursue innovative mechanisms for raising finance for development and creating a favourable Intellectual Property Regime, the PM emphasised. Dwelling on climate change, Singh said the issue threatened the environment and as well as development. In this direction the countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh would have to work with firmness. It has almost been cleared that terrorism is deep rooted in these countries and violent incidents are being conducted from training camps and terrorist dens here. However, Prime Minister, Dr Singh and Pakistani Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani exchanged views mainly on terrorism during ASEM summit. Gilani assured that his country is committed to work with India to combat terrorism. Gilani also opined that terrorism is common enemy of India and Pakistan. But it is necessary in the context of facing terrorism that Pakistan should give its cooperation transparently to India. The top leader of ruling party of Pakistan (PPP), Benazir Bhutto was assassinated. Now there is need of special and firm determination to root out terrorism from Pakistan. Hence the countries of the world should consider on the call of Manmohan Singh and concrete steps should be adopted in this direction, because terrorism is the biggest hurdle in the way of development. |
