Rajasthan’s Shafiq leads J&K in Ranji Trophy

JAMMU, Oct 29: With Shafiq Khan of Rajasthan as captain, the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) has announced an 18-member team, including four cricketers from outside the state, for the first two matches of forthcoming Ranji Trophy Plate Group-A league phase four-day competitions starting from November third at different venues.
The team was formally announced by the president of the Association and Member Parliament, Dr Farooq Abdullah before the media at Srinagar yesterday.
The final team was named by the JKCA after probable from both Jammu and Kashmir wings of the Association attended a joint selection camp at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium.
Besides state cricketers, selection camp was also attended by first class cricketers from outside, as part of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) exercise to involve good stuff in the state teams for achieving better results.
Without giving much of surprise, the JKCA selectors’ penal retained two senior cricketers, Kavaljeet Singh and Vijay Sharma for the season besides giving chance to young Aditya Pratap Singh and new face, Mohsin Iqbal-- son of former J&K skipper, Mehboob Iqbal.
Other three outside players in the J&K Ranji team are wicket-keeper vice-captain, Varun Sharma (Delhi), Manoj Joalkar and Nizam (both from Maharashtra). Another Delhi cricketer, Deepak Joan has been included in the list of stand-by.
Including Deepak of Delhi, other eight players in the list of Stand-by are Sameer Ali, Vimarsh Kaw, Vimarsh Kaw, Asif Jeelani, Amit Bloeria, Naseer Want, Ian Dev Singh, Arshid, Parminder Singh.
The penal of selectors, who picked up the state Ranji squad included Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, Nirmal Singh, Vidya Bhaskar and Idrees Gundroo.
The team: Shafiq Khan (Rajasthan), captain, Varun Sharma (Delhi), vice-captain, Kanwaljit Singh, Arshid Bhat, Vijay Sharma, Sami-ullah Beig, Majid Dar, Sameer Khajuria, Fayaz Hazari, Pranav Mahajan, Javed Ahmad, Raman Dutta, Huwaid, Aditya Pratap Singh, Irshad Hussain, Mohsin Iqbal, Manoj Joalkar (Maharashtra), Nizam (Maharashtra).
Stand-by: Deepak Joan (Delhi), Sameer Ali, Vimarsh Kaw, Asif Jeelani, Naseer Want, Ian Dev Singh, Arshid and Parminder Singh. (SAN)
