| Leh -239 polling stations for 74,396 voters | | TOUR ACROSS CONSTITUENCIES | | Leh district, comprising two constituencies of Nobra and Leh, will go to polls on November 17th, 2008 in the first phase of J&K Assembly elections. Leh district has 74,396 registered voters for the 2008 elections, which include 37,623 male and 36,773 female voters. The total number of polling stations to be set up in 2008 elections is 239, as compared to 222 established in 2002 elections.
NOBRA There are 11,863 voters registered who are expected to exercise their franchise in the 2008 Assembly polls in Nobra constituency. Of these, 5,943 are male and 5,920 female voters. A total number of 56 polling stations will be set up this time, as compared to 49 in the 2002 elections. Mr. Sonam Wangchuk, an independent candidate, was elected unopposed from the Nobra Assembly segment in the 2002 elections. The constituency was carved out on 27th April, 1995 and was first represented by Mr. Testan Namgyal of National Conference (NC) in 1996.
LEH Leh Assembly constituency has 62,533 registered voters who are eligible to vote in 2008 elections. Of these, 31,680 are male and 30,853 female voters. The number of polling stations to be set up is 183, as compared to 173 in 2002 elections. Mr. Nawang Rigzin, an independent candidate, was declared elected unopposed from this constituency in 2002 elections. Leh constituency was first represented by Mr. Kushak Bakola of NC in 1957 and 1962 elections. Mr. Sonam Wangyal of the Congress wrested the seat in 1967 elections and retained it in 1972 polls. Another Congress candidate Mr. Sonam Narboo was elected from here in the 1977 polls. However, in 1983 Mr. Sonam Gyalsan of NC won from here. Congress candidates Mr. Tsering Samghel and Mr. Chering Dorjey won the Leh seat in 1987 and 1996 Assembly elections. |
