Kargil –women voters outnumber men

Kargil district has two constituencies of Kargil and Zanskar which will also go to polls in the first phase of J&K Assembly elections on November 17th 2008. A total of 78,117 voters registered are eligible to cast vote in the ensuing polls. Of these, 38,770 are male and 39,347 female voters. A total of 237 polling stations are being set up in 2008 elections, as compared to 219 established in 2002 elections.

KARGIL
The total voters registered to cast their votes in 2008 elections in the constituency are 58,073. Interestingly in this constituency, 29,243 female voters are registered which is more than the male voter figure of 28,830. The number of polling stations set up is 158 as compared to 149 in 2002 elections.
Haji Nissar Ali, an independent candidate, was elected from this constituency in 2002 defeating his nearest NC rival Mr. Qamar Ali Akhoon by a margin of 6,396 votes. Haji Nissar Ali polled 27,384 votes while as Mr. Akhoon received 20,988 votes out of 48,372 votes polled overall. The poll percentage recorded was recorded at 74.82.
This Assembly segment was represented by Aga Syed Ibrahim of NC in 1957 and 1962. Mr. Kachu Mohammad Ali Khan won from here on a Congress ticket in 1967 and 1972 elections. Mr. Munshi Habibullah of NC wrested the seat in 1977 and retained it in 1983. Mr. Qamar Ali Akhoon won 1987 and 1996 Assembly elections on NC ticket.
ZANSKAR

Zanskar has a total of 20,044 registered voters for the coming 2008 elections. Female voters outnumber men with 10,104 as compared to 9,940 male voters. A total of 79 polling stations will be set up, as compared to 70 in 2002 elections.
Mr. Ghulam Abbas of NC was elected from this constituency in 2002 elections defeating his nearest independent rival Mr. Tsering Chosphel by a margin of 3,187 votes. Mr. Tsering Chosphel polled 5,393 votes and Mr. Abbas 8,580 votes. The poll percentage was recorded at 78.96. Due to the demise of Mr. Abbas, the constituency went to a by-election on 25th August, 2005 and Mr. Ghulam Raza, an independent candidate, was declared elected from this constituency.
Zanskar constituency was carved out on 17th April, 1995 and went to polls in 1996. Mr. Ghulam Abbas had also won from this constituency in 1996.
