NC faces first jolt
Naz quits; contesting independently

JAMMU, Oct 29: On an exceptionally overconfident note the National Conference today suffered first major jolt when its senior leader and Member Legislative Council Bashir Ahmed Naz quit party to contest election as an independent candidate from Poonch-Haveli constituency.
Meanwhile political activity has picked up tremendously in four districts going to polls in first phase on November 17. There is no clear contest between any two major parties if all four districts are seen together though in some constituencies the Congress and National Conference are strongly pitched against other.
Though the Congress has not yet official announced list of its nominees but the candidates for the first have phase have been informed about their candidature. Member Parliament Choudhary Mohammad Aslam has been given ticket for Surankote constituency while Jahangir Mir has been repeated at Poonch-Haveli constituency. In Mendhar, the Congress has given ticket to Nisar Ahmed Khan, who has shifted loyalties from the Peoples Democratic Party after being denied ticket.
The National Conference has repeated Javed Ahmed Rana at Mendhar, Syed Mushtaq Bukhari at Surankote. Both were sitting legislators in the previous assembly. For Poonch-Haveli constituency, the National Conference has given ticket to Ajaz Jaan which has spared off dissidence in the party leading to resignation of its senior leader Bashir Ahmed Naaz.
Naaz was till today expecting Congress ticket but the party high command decided contrary to his expectations and preferred the Jahangir Mir who had won the December 2007 by-elections. Naaz has now decided to file his papers and contest elections as independent candidate. In a constituency which has significant caste polarization, Naaz stands better chances of winning.
Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party today officially announced the names of its candidates for the first phase of general elections.
A spokesman of PDP said that the party president Mehbooba Mufti today gave its assent to the recommendations of the Party's Parliamentary Affairs committee and officially confirmed the candidature of Nazir Ahmed Bhat as Party's candidate for Gurez, Nizamudin Bhat for Bandipora, Yasir Reshi for Sonawari, assembly segments in Kashmir Division, Tashi gyalson for Leh, Mohammad Amin for Zanskar assembly segment for Ladakh Division, and Dr Mumtaz Bukhari for Surenkote, Sardar Rafiq Hussain Khan for Mmendhar and Imtiyaz Hussain Bandey for Poonch Haveli assembly segment for Jammu Divisions.
PDP spokesman said that the party will soon announce the names of its candidates for the rest of constituencies
In Leh, Nawang Rigzin of Nimmu and Rigzin Spalbar of Skara filed their nomination papers as Indian National Congress candidates for the 48-Leh Assembly segment today. They deposited their papers in the office of Returning Officer of the Leh Constituency.
Meanwhile District Election Officer, Leh in a circular issued here today has asked the concerned for strict observance and adherence to Model Code of Conduct enforced in the State in connection with the conduct of Assembly Elections-2008.
In Bandipore district, Reyaz Ahmad Wani filed his nomination papers as Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) and Manzoor Ahmad Khan as All India Forward Block (AIFB) Candidates for Bandipora constituency while as Mohammad Akbar Dar filed his nominations as Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) candidate for Sonawari constituency today.
The prospective candidates who obtained forms for Bandipora constituency include Abdul Rehman Thikeri (RJD), Shamsuddin Khan (BJP), Mohammad Iqbal Lone (Independent), Ghulam Rasool Mir (NC), Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Bhat (ANC), Gousia Bashir (Independent), Nizamuddin Bhat (PDP), Abdul Majeed Rahi (Independent)Haji Habibullah Paloo (JK Labour Party) and Mohammad Ramzan Khan (independent).
The prospective candidates who got forms for Sonawari constituency are Abdul Aziz Hura (Lok Janshakti), Zahoor Ahmad Mir (RJD), Molvi Mushtaq Ahmad (Independent), Mushtaq Ahmad Ganai (Independent), Mohammad Aslam Fafu (NDC) and Mohammad Ashraf Dar (Independent).
Similarly Nazir Ahmad Khan (NC) and Nazir Ahmad Bhat (PDP) have also obtained forms for Gurez constituency.
