Over 2.92 lakh to vote in 4 segments of Pulwama dist
373 polling stations set up to facilitate voters

The saffron-rich district of Pulwama, lying in south Kashmir, is going to polls on 13th December, 2008 during the fifth phase of Assembly elections in the State to elect 4 candidates from as many constituencies. These constituencies are Tral, Pampore, Pulwama and Rajpora. The district has a total electorate of 2,92,959 out of which 1,51,635 are male and 1,41,324 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 373, as compared to 282 in the 2002 Assembly elections. Pertinent to mention here that two Assembly segments of Wachi and Shopian in erstwhile Pulwama district now constitute the newly carved out district of Shopian.

31-Tral
The total electorate registered for 2008 elections in the constituency is 73,944. Of these, 38,602 are male and 35,342 female voters. The number of polling stations will be 96, as compared to 82 in 2002 elections. The number of electorate in 2002 was 59,555 of these 6,878 voters cast their votes and poll percentage stood at 11.54.
Mr. Ghulam Nabi Bhat of National Conference (NC) was elected from this constituency in 2002 elections defeating his nearest INC rival Mr. Surinder Singh by a margin of 309 votes. While Mr. Bhat polled 3,253 votes, Mr. Surinder Singh received 2,944 votes.
The constituency was represented by Mr. Abdul Gani Trali of NC in 1957 and also IN 1962 Assembly elections. Mr. Ali Mohammad Naik won the 1967, 1972 and 1983 Assembly elections as an independent candidate. Mr. Mohammad Subhan Bhat of NC won from here in 1977 while as Mr. Ghulam Nabi Naik, again of NC, represented the constituency in 1987 elections. Mr. Ali Mohammad Naik won this seat in 1996 as an NC candidate.
32-Pampore
This Assembly segment has 68,898 registered electorate for the coming 2008 elections, which includes 35,370 male and 33,528 female voters. The total number of polling stations in the constituency is 86, as compared to 58 in 2002 elections. The Pampore Assembly constituency was won by Mr. Abdul Aziz Mir of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2002 elections when he defeated his nearest INC rival Mr. Mohammad Anwar Bhat by a margin of 705 votes. While Mr. Mir polled 3,811 votes, Mr. Bhat received 3,106 votes. The total electorate in 2002 was 51,688 and the votes polled were 9,908. The poll percentage was recorded at 19.16.
Due to the assassination of Mr. Mir in 2002, by-election was held in Pampore constituency on 26.02.2003 in which Mr. Zahoor Ahmad Mir, again of PDP, was elected defeating his nearest NC rival Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad by a margin of 12,782 votes. While Mr. Mir polled 14,317 votes, 1,535 votes were polled by Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad out of 19,412 votes polled overall. The total registered electorate in the constituency was 51,688 and the poll percentage was recorded at 37.59.
Pampore constituency was represented by Mr. Ghulam Jeelani of NC in 1957 and 1962. Pir Mubarak Shah of the Congress won from here in 1967 while as Mr. Ghulam Hassan Masoodi of INC was declared elected in the 1972 elections. Mr. Malik Mohi-ud-Din, Mr. Mohammad Sultan, Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din and Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad, all of NC, were elected from this constituency in 1977, 1983, 1987 and 1996 Assembly elections respectively.
33-Pulwama
This Assembly segment has 70,999 registered electorate for the coming 2008 elections, which includes 36,631 male and 34,368 female voters. The total number of polling stations in the constituency is 90, as compared to 64 in 2002 elections. The Pulwama Assembly constituency was won by Mr. Mohammad Khalil Band of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2002 elections when he defeated his nearest NC rival Mr. Bashir Ahmad Nengroo by a margin of 2,427 votes. While Mr. Band polled 5,209 votes, Mr. Nengroo received 2,782 votes. The total electorate in 2002 elections was 54,107 and the votes polled were 9,811. The poll percentage was recorded at 18.13.
Pulwama Assembly segment was represented by Mr. Sonaullah Sheikh of NC in 1957 and 1962. Master Sonaullah of the Congress won from here in 1967. In 1972 Mr. Sonaullah of INC won from this constituency. NC candidates Mr. Mohammad Ibrahim Dar and Mr. Sonullah Dar were declared elected from here in 1977 and 1983 Assembly elections while as Mr. B. A. Nengroo won this seat in 1987 and 1996 elections.
34-Rajpora
The total electorate expected to exercise their right to vote in Rajpora constituency is 79,118, which includes 41,032 male and 38,086 female voters. The total number of polling stations to be installed is 101, as compared to 78 in 2002 elections. The total electorate in 2002 Assembly elections was 64,829 out of which 23,799 cast their votes. The total percentage was recorded at 36.71.
Mr. Syed Bashir Ahmad of PDP was elected from this constituency in 2002 defeating his nearest NC rival Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Mir by a margin of 8, 086 votes. While Mr. Syed Bashir secured 13,946 votes, Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Mir polled 5,860 votes.
The constituency was continuously represented by Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Rajpori as NC candidate in 1957 and 1962 while as he won from here in 1967 as a Congress candidate. Mr. Bashir Ahmad Magray of INC was elected from here in 1972 and Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Dar of NC in 1996 Assembly elections.
