Over 1.43 lakh to exercise franchise in Kishtwar, Inderwal constituencies

The newly-created Kishtwar district comprises two constituencies of Kishtwar and Inderwal. As a new district, it goes to polls for the first time on December 17, 2008 in the sixth phase of J&K Assembly elections. The total electorate registered in the district is 1,43,718. Of these, 73,741 are male and 69,977 female voters. The total number of polling stations to be set up in 2008 elections is 187, as compared to 179 in 2002 .
51-KISHTWAR
This constituency has 70,218 registered electorate for 2008 polls, which includes 35,896 male and 34,322 female voters. A total of 96 polling stations will be set up, as compared to 93 in 2002 elections.
Mr. Sajad Hussain Kitchloo of NC was elected from this constituency in 2002 defeating his nearest Congress rival Mr. Ghulam Hyder Sheikh by a margin of 1,663 votes. Mr. Kitchloo polled 16,725 votes while as Mr. Sheikh received 15,062 votes. 40,473 people exercised their franchise out of 73,793 registered voters. The poll percentage was recorded at 54.84.
This constituency was represented by Mr. Syed Mir Budshah of NC in 1957 and 1962 elections. Mr. Ghulam Mustafa and Mr. Nizam-ud-Din, both Congress candidates, represented the Assembly segment in the 1967 and 1972 elections. Mr. Bashir Ahmad Kitchloo of NC wrested the seat in 1977 while as Mr. Ghulam Hassan Arman won from here in 1983 polls. Mr. Bashir Ahmad Kitchloo of NC again won in 1987 and 1996 elections.
52-INDERWAL
This Assembly segment has a total of 73,500 registered electorate which includes 37,845 male and 35,655 female voters. The number of polling stations to be set up is 91, as compared to 86 established in 2002 elections.
Mr. Ghulam Mohammad of INC was elected from this constituency in 2002 defeating his nearest NC rival Mr. Jalal-ud-Din by a margin of 18,884 votes. Mr. Ghulam Mohammad polled 24,551 votes while as Mr. Jalal-ud-Din received 5,667 votes out of the 37,917 votes polled. The total electorate registered for the 2002 polls was 66,987 and the poll percentage was recorded at 56.60.
This constituency was known as Bhalesa-Banjwah constituency in 1957 and 1962 polls when Mr. Abdul Gani Goni of NC was elected from here to the State Assembly. He again won the seat in 1967 and 1972 polls on a Congress ticket. However, NC candidate Mr. Sheikh Ghulam Mohammad wrested the seat in 1977 and retained it in 1983. Mr. Mohammad Sharief Niaz and Mr. Jalal-ud-Din, both of NC, were elected from this constituency in 1987 and 1996 respectively.
