| Reasi – Three constituencies of this new district going polls on Dec 7 | | TOUR ACROSS CONSTITUENCIES | | The newly-created district of Reasi will go to polls on December 7th, 2008 during the fourth phase of J&K Assembly elections to elect three candidates from as many constituencies. These constituencies are Gulabgarh, Reasi and Gool Arnas. The total registered electorate in the district for the 2008 polls is 2,12,242, which includes 1,10,653 male and 1,01,589 female voters. The total polling stations to be set up in the district are 350, as compared to 302 set up in the 2002 polls.
GULAB GARH This Assembly segment has 59,625 registered electorate out of which 30,948 are male and 28, 677 female voters. The total number of polling stations will be 97, as against 84 established in 2002 Assembly elections. . Abdul Gani Malik of NC was elected from here in 2002 defeating his nearest independent rival Mr. Aijaz Ahmad Khan by a margin of 2,930 votes. He polled 12,476 votes as compared to 9,546 votes received by Mr. Khan. A total of 35,492 people exercised their right to vote out of the total electorate of 63,386. The poll percentage was recorded at 55.99. This constituency was earlier known as Arnas and was represented by NC candidate Mr. Mohammad Ayub Khan in 1957 and 1962. He was again elected from this constituency on a Congress ticket in 1967 and 1972. Haji Buland Khan of NC won this seat in 1977, 1983 and 1987 Assembly elections. In 1996, this constituency was represented by Mr. Abdul Gani Malik of JD.
REASI This Assembly segment has 97,080 registered electorate out of which 50,608 are male and 46,472 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 146, as against 136 set up in 2002 Assembly elections. The constituency was won by Mr. Jugal Kishore of the INC in 2002 Assembly polls. He defeated his nearest BJP rival Mr. Baldev Raj by a margin of 2,056 votes. Mr. Kishore secured 23,045 votes while as Mr. Baldev Raj polled 20,989. The total votes polled were 62,333 and poll percentage was recorded at 62.19. The constituency was represented by Mr. Reshi Kesh of NC in 1957 while as Mr. R.K. Kushal of PP won from here in 1962. Mr. B.L. Kohistani of the Congress was elected in the 1967 elections while as Mr. Reshi Kumar Koushal again won from here as a BJS candidate in 1972. Mr. Koushal represented the constituency again 1977 as a JP candidate. Mr. Jagjivan Lal of NC won this seat in 1983 while as Mr. Mohammad Ayub Khan of the Congress was elected from here in 1987. In 1996, Mr. Jagjivan Lal won from here on a JD ticket.
GOOL ARNAS This Assembly segment has 55,537 registered electorate out of which 29,097 are male and 26,440 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 107, as compared to 82 set up in 2002 Assembly elections. Aijaz Ahmad Khan, an independent candidate, was elected from Gool Arnas in the 2002 Assembly polls. He defeated his nearest BJP rival Mr. Kabala Singh by a margin of 4,986 votes. While Mr. Khan received 10,881 votes, Mr. Kabala Singh got 5,895 votes out of the total of 32,614 votes polled. The poll percentage was recorded at 60.08. The constituency was carved out on 27th April, 1995 and went to polls for the first time in 1996. Mr. Abdul Wahid Shan of NC was elected from this constituency in 1996. |
