| Udhampur District -2.81 lakh voters, 350 polling stations | | TOUR ACROSS CONSTITUENCIES | | District Udhampur which has three constituencies of Udhampur, Chenani (SC) and Ram Nagar will go to polls on December 7th, 2008 during the fourth phase of J&K Assembly elections. The total electorate registered for the 2008 polls is 2,81,452. Of these, 1,48,076 are male and 1,33,376 female voters. The number of polling stations to be set up will be 350, as compared to 280 established in 2002 elections.
UDHAMPUR This Assembly segment has 1,02,921 registered electorate out of which 53,945 are male and 48,976 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 123, as against 102 set up in 2002 Assembly elections. Balwant Singh of JKNPP was elected from this constituency in 2002. He defeated his nearest BJP rival Mr. Pawan Kumar Gupta by a margin of 9,952 votes. Mr. Kumar polled 14,727 votes while as Mr. Balwant Singh received 24,679 votes. The total electorate was 1,04,642 and the total votes polled were 61,103. The poll percentage was recorded at 58.39. The constituency was represented by Mr. Amar Nath Sharma of NC in 1957. He again won in 1962 but on as a PP candidate. Mr. Hem Raj Jandial of the Congress won this seat in 1967 while as another Congress candidate Mr. Dev Dutt was elected in 1972 Assembly polls. Mr. Shiv Charan of JP won this seat in 1977. Congress candidate Mr. Balak Ram won both in 1983 and 1987 elections. In the 1996 polls, this constituency was won by Mr. Shiv Charan Gupta of the BJP.
CHENANI This Assembly segment has 79,222 registered electorate out of which 41,917 are male and 37,305 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 92, as compared to 74 established in 2002 Assembly elections. Faquir Nath of JKNPP was elected from this constituency in 2002 when he defeated his nearest INC rival Mr. Krishan Chander by a margin of 1,765 votes. Mr. Nath polled 17,118 votes as compared to 15,353 polled by Mr. Chander. The total electorate in the constituency was 74,330 and votes polled were 45,743. The poll percentage was recorded at 61.54. The constituency was represented by Mr. Moti Ram of NC in 1957 and Mr. Shiv Charan of PP in 1962 when it was known as Lander Tikri constituency. Mr. Shiv Charan of PJS won from there again in 1967. Nirmala Devi of INC won this seat in 1972 while as Mr. Bhim Singh was elected from here in 1977 as NC candidate while as in 1983 he was elected as ND/PP candidate. Mr. Yesh Paul Khajuria of the INC won from here in 1987 while as Mr. Prithvi Chand of BJP represented this constituency in 1996.
RAM NAGAR This Assembly segment has 99,309 registered electorate out of which 52,214 are male and 47,095 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 135 as against 104 set up in 2002 Assembly elections. Harsh Dev Singh of JKNPP was elected from this constituency by defeating Mr. Khalil Ahmad Qazi of BSP by a margin of 16,484 votes. Mr. Qazi polled 13,430 votes as against 29,914 polled by Mr. Haresh Dev Singh. The total voters were 97,787 and votes polled 59,354. The poll percentage was recorded at 60.71. The constituency was represented by Mr. Hem Raj Jandial of NC both in 1957 and 1962. Mr. Chandu Lal of the Congress won this seat in 1967, 1972 elections. Mr. Prithvi Chand of BJP won from here in 1977 while as Mr. Ram Dass of the INC won in 1983. In the 1987 elections, Mr. Chandu Lal, again of INC, was elected while as Mr. Haresh Dev Singh of JKNPP won from here in 1996 polls. |
