| Marital troubles, family disputes raging in Valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Oct 31: In a strife torn Kashmir there is an obsession with political conflict so much so that the most important social issues like marital and family conflicts are kept at bay. The problem of marital or family disputes seem to be raging on and on with no apparent end in sight. And going by experts, one of the major causes of marital conflict is the economical independence of Women. "According to our survey we have observed that 39% families appreciating the working role of Women which was more visible in urban and sub-urban areas. The monetary benefits were one of the important considerations in this response On the other hand, 61% families were critical of the women's working role mainly because of negative implications on their families in general and children on particular,'' reiterates noted Sociologist Prof B.A Dabla He further asserted that 29% families argued that the adoption of Women's working role had both positive and negative implications. Many of these families prohibit their Women forcibly to work in the offices. While highlighting domestic violence against working women in a tight-knit family Dabla maintains "It has been observed that there emerges a significant degree of jealously among the in-laws against the working Women. Subsequently, this becomes one of the potential bases of domestic violence against Women and assumes horrendous dimension,''. Studies have revealed that 48% of working women reported that they have invited varying degree of jealousy on the part of some members of the in laws against their working role. Nevertheless 51.72% working Women asserted that home environment turned less hostile against their decision to become financially independent. The discrimination against working Women was more prominent in villages than in urban areas in both literate and illiterate families. Moreso, this discrimination was also observed in all income groups; in both nuclear and joint families. According to psychologists there is need to understand the dispute within the context of women's' subordinate status in patriarchal society. It is argued that many cultures have beliefs, norms, and institutions that legitimize and therefore perpetuate violence against women if she goes against them. "Once we recognize our interpersonal conflicts as having their origins within our own minds, we need to learn how to deal them said Dr Sumaira, psychologist. She underlined the need to mitigate the adverse impact that such conflicts can have on marital life. ‘If marital conflicts are not addressed in time, it can bring strain in relations to the extent that divorce will become inevitable,' she added. |
