| Covert disabilities into strengths: Vohra | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRIANGAR, Oct 31: Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today called for creating adequate avenues for physically challenged persons to enable them to manage their lives on their own and, besides, to contribute towards the betterment of their families and the society as a whole. Inaugurating a Mega Rehabilitation & Distribution Camp, besides launching of the Composite Regional Centre website, here this morning, the Governor exhorted the civil society top come forward in a big way in converting the physical disabilities of the disadvantaged segments of the society into strengths for facing the challenges of life with much more vigour and confidence. "Physical infirmity should not be allowed to come in the way of the physically challenged to grow as useful and responsible citizens", Mr Vohra said, adding that here comes the role for the institutions like CRC to help them with accessories and other aids to deal with the problems of their lives. He ob served that such people deserve sensitive attention and devoted care rather than pity and referred to the great contributions made by the physically challenged in various spheres of life. The Governor expressed the hope that the Centre will dedicate itself to the cause of the physically challenged and provide them the much needed specialized attention in terms of counseling and various aids. He complimented the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, for supporting the Centre with expertise and other logistical support in carrying out its missionary role to serve the physically challenged. He also called for advanced research at the Centre with the avowed objective of improving the quality of life of these disadvantaged people. Speaking on the occasion, Director CRC, Dr Reyaz A Untoo, gave a brief history of the Centre, explained the objectives and highlighted the academic, clinical and rehabilitation services being provided to physically challenged population of the Valley. He said that such camps would also be held in other districts of the Valley so that more and more disabled persons could be extended these services. He acknowledged the cooperation and support extended by the State Administration, National Composite Institute, University of Kashmir, Manipal University and Bhoj University in the development and growth of the Centre. The Advisor to Governor, Dr Sudhir S Bloeria, inaugurated the B Ed Special Education Programme of the CRC, while the Vice Chancellor University of Kashmir, Dr Reyaz Punjabi, released the News Letter. Dr Mehraj-ud-Din, Ex Director, SKIMS, released the first Annual Report of the Centre. Vohra presented hearing aids, tricycles and walking sticks for the visually impaired persons. The Camp, organized by the CRC for Persons with Disabilities, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, was attended by 500 beneficiaries belonging to various parts of the Valley. They were assessed and provided tricycles, wheel chairs, artificial limbs, calipers, hearing aids, walking sticks, magnifying glasses, free of cost, under a centrally sponsored programme. Among those present on the occasion were the Principal Secretary to Governor, Mr B B Vyas, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mr M A Kakroo, senior officers, besides the families of the Disabled Persons. |
