Honorarium, risk cover for poll officials

JAMMU, Oct 31: Manning elections in Jammu and Kashmir is always a difficult task for the security risks involved but it is not a bad idea yet. The Government has decided to pay heavily all those performing election duties. Not only this, a descent amount has also been fixed should there be any fatal eventuality or sustenance of grievous injuries.
Government has accorded sanction to the payment of honorarium and DA to the state government employees (Polling Staff) deployed for poll duty for General Elections to the State Legislative Assembly-2008.
According to government order issued today, the employees would get honorarium of Rs. 10,000 for a single duty arrangement while as Rs. 5,000 would be paid to them for each additional phase of election duty in the State.
The employees deployed for General Elections to the State Legislative Assembly-2008 would also be given DA as admissible under rules on the day/days the polling staff is compulsorily detained for election duty. The funds for this purpose would be made available to the concerned Deputy Commissioners by the Chief Electoral Officer, Jammu and Kashmir.
Government has also accorded sanction to the payment of ex-gratia relief in favour of government employees including security and police personnel deployed for election duties.
The ex-gratia amount in case of death would be Rs. 10 lakh, Rs. 5 lakh in case of permanent disability and Rs. one lakh in case of partial disability.
An order issued to this effect today says that ex-gratia relief shall also be provided to the drivers and conductors of hired private vehicles detailed for election duty by the Election Authorities, police and Security Forces.
The order further says that the next of the kin of a government employee who may get killed during the election duty shall be entitled to compassionate appointment in terms of SRO-43 of 1994.
