EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 31:

• 16 candidates including one female in list of 43 are from Kashmir Valley

• ‘Agitation martyr’ Kuldeep’s wife Shilpi Verma fielded from Bishnah

Finally, the Bhartiya Janta Party has taken lid off the list of its nominees for almost key seats for Jammu (and Kashmir) but the battle ahead is not quite easy as choice of candidates has left many potential aspirants in fits of rage.
A meeting of the Central Election Committee of BJP held under the chairmanship of party president Rajnath Singh and attended among others by LK Advani approved names of candidates for 43 constituencies. This also includes 16 seats from Kashmir Valley where party is contesting mostly first time.
Names have been declared for all seats of Jammu district but no decision has been announced for the neighbouring Samba constituency. The party also appeared to be hit by crises in Kathua district where one candidate has been given ticket for two constituencies while no candidate has been chosen for Hiranagar constituency which BJP had won in 1996.
A notable name in the BJP’s list of 43 candidates is Shilpi Verma, the wife of Kuldeep Verma who had allegedly committed suicide during the Amarnath land row. Shilpi has been fielded as party candidate from Bishnah constituency.
As already expected the three known faces of BJP who called shots in candidate selection process have been given tickets for the three prestigious constituencies of Jammu City. Dr Nimal Singh has been fielded in Gandhi Nagar constituency, Ashok Khajuria in Jammu East and Prof Chaman Lal Gupta in Jammu West. City Mayor Kavinder Gupta was making all possible efforts for Jammu West even as a BJP activist Sunil Dimple hinted at contesting independently from this constituency against the party’s official nominee.
BJP’s lone winner of 2002 elections Jugal Kishore has been repeated in Nagrota constituency while Chander Prakash Ganga has been given ticket for Vijaypur. Ganga had lost 2002 elections in this constituency.
