| Kathua: 4 lakh voters in 5 Assembly segments | | TOUR ACROSS CONSTITUENCIES | | District Kathua, which goes to polls on December 13th, 2008 during the fifth phase of J&K Assembly elections , has 4,02,747 registered voters, which includes 2,10,301 male and 1,92,446 female voters. Kathua district has 5 Assembly segments namely Bani, Basohli, Kathua, Billawar and Hiranagar (SC). The number of polling stations to be set up in the district for smooth conduct of the polls is 541, as compared to 509 in the 2002 Assembly elections. The total electorate in 2002 in the district was 3, 39,427 and total votes polled were 2,40,755. The poll percentage was recorded at 61.19.
BANI This Assembly segment has 37,197 registered voters out of which 19,354 are male and 17,843 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set is 69, which is exactly the same that were established in 2002 Assembly elections. Prem Sagar of the Congress was elected from Bani in 2002 elections when he defeated his nearest NC rival Mr. Ghulam Haider Malik by a margin of 3,687 votes. Mr. Haider polled 6,708 votes while as Mr. Sagar polled 10,395 votes of the total 24,356 votes polled. The total electorate was 36,015 and the poll percentage was recorded at 67.62. Bani constituency was carved out on 27th April 1995 and went to polls for the first time in 1996. Mr. Ghulam Haider Malik of the NC was elected from here in 1996.
BASOHLI There are 67,391 voters registered to cast their votes in 2008 elections from this constituency. Of these 35,234 are male and 32,157 female voters. The number of polling stations to be set up is 112, which is exactly the same set up for the 2002 polls. Lal Singh of the Congress won this constituency by defeating his nearest BJP rival Mr. Jagdish Raj Sapolia by a margin of 3,668 votes. Mr. Lal Singh secured 18,916 votes and Mr. Sapolia polled 15,248 votes. The poll percentage was recorded at 63.13. Lal Singh resigned as MLA and by-election was held in the constituency on October 13th, 2004. Mrs. Kanta Andotra of INC was elected again defeating Mr. Jagdish Raj Sapolia of the BJP. Mahesh Chander of the PP won this seat in 1957. In 1962 and 1967, Mr. Mahant Ram won on NC and Congress mandate respectively. However, Mr. Mangat Ram of INC represented the constituency for three consecutive terms in 1972,1977 and 1983 elections. Mr. Jagdish Raj Sapolia, again of the Congress, won in 1987 elections. This seat was won by Ch. Lal Singh on AICCT ticket in 1996.
KATHUA The total number of electorate registered for the 2008 elections in the constituency is 1,10,542. Of this, 58,437 are male and 52,105 female voters. The polling stations being set up in the Assembly segment is 122, as compared to 105 set up in 2002 elections. Babu Singh of DM was elected from this constituency in 2002 elections. He defeated his nearest BSP rival Mr. Sagar Chand by a margin of 3,059 votes. Mr. Babu Singh polled 16,366 votes while as Mr. Sagar Chand polled 13,307 votes. The total electorate in 2002 polls was 1,12,359 and the votes polled were 64,021. The poll percentage was recorded at 56.98. The constituency was represented by Maj. Piyara Singh of NC in 1957. Mr. Randhir Singh, again of NC won in 1962 elections. Mr. Punjaboo Ram of the Congress won from here in 1967 and 1972 while as Mr. Dhian Chand of JP won the 1977 polls. Mr. Sanji Ram and Om Prakash, both of INC, won this seat in 1983 and 1987 elections respectively. Mr. Sagar Chand of the BSP represented the constituency in 1996 polls.
BILLAWAR Billawar constituency has 88,148 voters registered for 2008 elections. Of these, 46,274 are male and 41,874 female voters. The polling stations to be set up are 132, as against 123 established in 2002 elections. Manohar Lal Sharma, an independent candidate, won Billawar seat in 2002 Assembly elections when he defeated his nearest INC rival Mr. Balbir Singh by a margin of 14,561 votes. Mr. Sharma polled 24,736 votes and Mr. Balbir Singh 10,175 votes out of 51,783 votes polled overall. The number of electors in Billawar for 2002 polls were 81,170 and the poll percentage was recorded at 63.80. This constituency was represented by Mr. Ram Chand Khajuria of NC in 1957 and 1962 elections. Mr. Randhir Singh won this seat in 1967 and 1972 on a Congress ticket. Mr. Dhian Singh of JP represented this constituency in 1977 while as in 1983, 1987 and 1996 Congress candidates namely Puran Singh, Suram Singh and Balbir Singh have been elected from Billawar Assembly segment.
HIRANAGAR Hiranagar, the fifth constituency of district Kathua, has 99,469 voters registered to cast their votes in 2008 elections. Of these, 51,002 are male and 48,467 female voters. The number of polling stations to be set up are 106 as against 100 set up in 2002 elections. Girdhari Lal of INC won this seat in 2002 Assembly elections when he defeated his nearest BJP rival Mr. Gopal Dass by a margin of 18,212 votes. Mr. Dass polled 13,190 votes while as Mr. Girdhari Lal polled 31,402 out of 57,215 votes polled overall. The poll percentage was recorded at 60.11 and the total electorate registered was 95,173. The constituency was known as Jasmir Ghar till 1972. Mr. Girdhari Lal Dogra won five successive terms from 1957 to 1977 elections. While as he won as NC candidate in 1957 and 1962 elections, he was successfully represented the constituency in 1967, 1972 and 1977 elections on a Congress ticket. In 1983, this seat was won by Ram Dass of the Congress party while as Mr. Baldev Singh of BJP won in 1987 elections. Another BJP candidate Mr. Prem Lal was elected from this constituency in 1996 elections. |
