Samba: 1.72 lakh voters in two segments of this new district
TOUR ACROSS CONSTITUENCIES

The newly-carved out Samba district, comprising two constituencies of Samba and Vijaypur, will go to polls on December 24th, 2008 in the seventh and final phase of J&K Assembly polls. The total electorate registered to cast their votes in 2008 elections is 1,72,929, which includes 86,227 male and 86,702 female voters. The number of polling booths is 191, as compared to 180 set up in 2002.

SAMBA
This Assembly segment has 74,863 registered electorate out of which 37,861 are male and 37,002 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 88, as against 84 set up in 2002 Assembly elections.
Yashpaul Kundal of JKNPP was elected from here in 2002 elections defeating his nearest INC rival Mrs. Swaran Lata by a margin of 746 votes. Mr. Kundal polled 11,079 votes while as Mrs. Swaran Lata received 10,333 votes out of the 43,780 votes polled overall. The poll percentage was recorded at 58.42.
Mehar Singh (RSV) and Mr. Sagar Singh of NC represented the Assembly segment from 1957 to 1962. Mr. K. Sagar Singh, again of NC, represented this constituency in 1962. Mr. Paramanand and Gauri Shankar of the Congress won from here in 1967 and 1972 elections. Mr. Dhian Singh, an independent candidate, won this seat in 1977. In 1983 and 1987 elections INC candidate Mr. Prakash Sharma represented the constituency. The seat was won by BSP candidate Mr. Som Nath in 1996 Assembly elections.

VIJAYPUR
This Assembly segment has 98,066 registered electorate out of which 48,366 are male and 49,700 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 103, as against 96 set up in 2002 Assembly elections.
The constituency was known as Ramgarh till 1972 and Bari Brahmana till 1983. Mr. Parmanand of NC won from here in 1962 while as in 1967 Congress candidate Mr. Dina Nath represented this constituency. In 1972 another Congress candidate Mr. Baldev Sharma was elected while as Mrs. Gurbachan Kumari of JP won this seat in 1977 elections. Gouri Shanker of INC and Mrs. Swaran Lata of the same party represented this constituency in 1983 and 1987 respectively. Mr. Surjit Singh Salathia of NC won from here in 1996.
