| PDP asks people to judge performance | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 1: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Ms Mehbooba Mufti today said the day dreaming of National Conference (NC) to grab power against the wishes of the people of the state is misplaced and flows from this party's belief that it is indispensable to Kashmir. Addressing a workers convention at Khushipora-Batmaloo after she formally kicked off party's poll campaign, Mehbooba said that NC forced the State into an election at a very wrong time because of its lust for power and its belief that a low turn out will help it as it had in 1996. But the NC leadership, she said, should understand the wide difference between situation that prevailed in the State then and in 2008 when people have experienced free elections which threw up a credible alternative in the shape of PDP. Mehbooba said that people have already witnessed the results of the marginalisation of NC in the State politics which had paved way for historic developments on political, diplomatic and developmental fronts. NC, she said, has always held the State hostage to its political interests and subverted all efforts at resolving of the basic problems. "This party should see the writing on the wall clearly even if there was a low turn out as fondly hoped by NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, people would vote only to dump NC once for all," She remarked. Mehbooba added that her assessment of the situation was not based on the emotions or rhetoric but it is born out by the situation on the ground and the positive contribution made by the PDP led government in a short span of its rule. PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's leadership, she said, had set the State on a new path of peace, dignity and progress but unfortunately the gains made then were fettered away subsequently because of incompetent and motivated handling of the State. Pointing to the huge presence of security force in the area where she was addressing the party workers, Mehbooba asked the people to judge for themselves the deterioration that had been brought into the situation from 2005 onwards. She said while about 80 per cent people participated in the elections for local bodies in 2005 without any fear or interference the situation is quite different now. That is why, she said, the PDP had pleaded for deferring the elections till a conducive atmosphere was revived. "Since we have accepted the challenge, the people should judge and vote only on the basis of performance," she said and added that in view of the recent developments in the State, it was imperative for the people here to vote for one party to choose strong and credible government which is not blackmailed into sellouts. |
