EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 1: Peoples Democratic Party patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and daughter Mehbooba Mufti have clearly opted out of their home turf of Pahalgam as party today announced list of its 25 candidates for as many constituencies in Kashmir and Jammu.
Barring Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in Pahalgam and Peer Mohammad Hussain in Shangus, the Peoples Democratic Party has repeated all its sitting legislators and most of those candidates who had contested last elections from same constituencies.
As already reported by this newspaper that Mufti or Mehbooba are unlikely to contest from Pahalgam, the party has done exactly the same by vacating this seat for another potential candidate. Mehbooba has won the Pahalgam seat in 2002 but vacated the same after her election to the Lok Sabha in 2004. Same year, Mufti Sayeed sought re-election from Pahalgam constituency and won with a record margin.
This time, however, the father-daughter duo have vacated the Pahalgam seat for Rafi Ahmed Mir who was earlier nominated by the party as Member of the Legislative Council. Mir has remained a National Conference legislator from the same constituency and of late he switched loyalties to the Peoples Democratic Party.
Party sources said that Mehbooba may contest election from Anantnag constituency and Mufti may skip contesting election. Anantnag constituency was till recently held by Dr Mehbooba Beg of National Conference who is also party’s provincial president for Kashmir region.
A Peoples Democratic Party spokesman said that after recommendations from party’s Parliamentary Affairs Committee, the President Mehbboba Mufti approved the list of 25 candidates. The present list of 25 candidates does not touch upon Anantnag constituency from where Mehbooba is likely to seek election.
Javed Mustafa Mir has been repeated for Chadoora constituency, Ghulam Nabi Lone from Charar-e-Sharif, Swaran Singh from Marh, Rafi Ahmad Mir from Pehalgam, Sarpanj Arshad from Nowshera, Saif-u-Din Bhat alias Shatru from Khan Sahib, Sardar Trilok Singh from Sucehtgarh, Ms Shamshad from Goolarnas, Abdul Haq Khan from Lolab, Raja Manzoor from Karnah, Qazi Mohammad Afzal from Ganderbal, Sardar Manjeet Singh from Vijaypore, A.R Veeri from Bijbehara, Ms Mumtaz from Gulabgarh, Dr Mohammad Shafi from Beerwah, Choudhary Zulfikar Ali from Darhaal, Master Tassaduq Hussain from Rajouri, Khalil Quershi from Kalakote, Sartaj Madani from Devsar, Abdul Aziz Zargar from Noorabad, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain from Shangus, Farooq Andrabi from Dooru, Abdul Gaffar Sofi from Home Shalibugh, Nazir Ahmad Lawey from Kulgam and Sehar Iqbal from Kokernag assembly segment.
The spokesman said that the party will soon announce the names of its candidates for the rest of constituencies.
