EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 2: The four-day North Zone Inter-University Table Tennis Tournament shall be declared open by the Vice-Chancellor of University of Jammu, Prof Amitabh Mattoo in a colourful function to be held on the campus at 10.30 am tomorrow.
It is after more than a decade that University is hosting such an event on the campus. The last event conducted by JU in sports was again in table tennis.
As per the already drawn fixtures, 32 teams in men’s section and 31 in women’s category have confirmed their entries for participation. However, of these confirmed entries, 15 in men and 13 in women section had reported the venue till this afternoon.
As many as 12 matches have been scheduled for tomorrow in men category while 11 matches shall be played in women section.
The host, JU, shall meet Gurukul University in men section while women team shall be playing against Choudhary Charan Singh University Hissar.
Last year, the men’s title was won by Delhi University beating Kurukshetra University in the final. Whereas in women’s section, Punjabi University Patiala is the reigning champion while Guru Nanak Dev University holds second position.
The matches will be played on four newly acquired international standard tables and other playing arena. For smooth conduct of the event, the JU has raised a technical committee headed by senior table tennis coach of the Department of Physical Education of the University, Ramesh Magotra.
To make the stay of visiting teams comfortable, JU has made arrangements for men teams at Vaishnavi Dham while women teams are staying at girls hostels of the University.
“Near 15 teams in men section and 13 in women section have reported us till this afternoon. A number of teams from Punjab are expected to reach the venue by this evening,” table tennis coach of JU, Ramesh Magotra told SAN.
It is pertinent to mention here that the JU had allotted the North Zone Inter-University Table Tennis Tournament in mid of September but it could not happen because of the prolonged agitation in Jammu. And, later, on a plea from the University to extend the date for the competition, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) finally agreed for first week of November.
The JU teams: Men: Ahil Gupta, Nitin Kesar, Vikram Dhaan, Suresh Kumar Sharma, Vikrant Joshi and Bhanu Pratap. Women: Svera Jamwal, Chandpreet Kour, Nidhi Arora, Bhumika, Monika and Preet Simran.
