999 polling booths for nearly a million voters in Jammu district
Polling in 11 constituencies on Dec 24 in final phase

Jammu leads all districts with 11 constituencies which will go to polls on December 24th 2008 in the seventh and final phase of J&K Assembly elections. These constituencies are Nagrota, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu East, Jammu West, Bishnah, R.S. Pura (SC), Suchetgarh, Marh, Raipur Domana (SC), Akhnoor and Chhamb. The total electorate registered for 2008 elections in the district is 9,43,389. Of these, 4,78,545 are male and 4,64,844 female voters. The number of polling stations being set up in the district are 999 in 2008, which is the highest in any district of the State. A total of 912 polling booths had been established for these 11 constituencies in 2002 elections.
70-Nagrota
Nagrota Assembly segment has 64,230 registered voters out of which 33,230 are male and 31,000 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 64, as compared to 60 set up in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mr. Jugal Kishore of BJP was elected from this constituency in 2002 defeating his nearest NC rival Mr. Ajat Shatru Singh by a margin of 67 votes only. Mr. Jugal polled 10,653 votes while as Mr. Singh got 10,586 votes. The total electorate was 62,238 and overall votes polled were 39,723. The poll percentage was recorded at 63.72.
This constituency was known as Jindra Gharotra till 1983 and was represented by Mr. Ronak Singh of NC in 1962 elections. Mr. Ranjit Singh of the Congress won the 1967 election while as another Congress candidate Mrs. Shanta Bharati won the 1972 polls. Mr. Dhan Raj of JP represented the constituency in 1977 while as Mr. Bhalwan Singh and Shiv Dev Singh, both of INC, won from here in 1983 and 1987 elections respectively. Mr. Ajat Shatru Singh of the NC was elected from here in 1996 polls.
71-Gandhi Nagar
This Assembly segment has 1,52,100 registered electorate out of which 78,663 are male and 73,437 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 162, as compared to 144 established in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mr. Raman Bhalla of INC was elected from here in 2002 elections defeating his nearest NC rival S. Harbans Singh by a margin of 10,493 votes. Mr. Bhalla polled 37,010 votes while as Mr. Harbans Singh received 26,517 votes, out of 74,299 votes polled overall. The total electorate was recorded at 1,53,334 and poll percentage was recorded at 48.40.
This constituency was represented by Mr. Rajinder Singh of PP and Mr. Milkhi Ram of HM from 1957 to 1962. Mr. Kulbeer Singh of NC won this seat in 1962 while as Mr. Tirlochan Dutt of the Congress wrested the seat in 1967. He won again in 1972 elections. In 1977, Mr. Pradhuman Singh of INC won this seat while as Mr. Tirlochan Dutt again won this seat in 1983 on a Congress ticket. Mr. H.S. Bali, an independent candidate, represented the constituency in 1987 elections. Ch. Piara Singh of BJP was elected from here in 1996.
72-Jammu East
Jammu East Assembly segment has 55,062 registered voters out of which 28,196 are male and 26,866 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up in the district is 82.
Mr. Yogesh Kumar Sawhney of INC won this seat in 2002 elections defeating Mr. Ashok Kumar of BJP by a margin of 3,336 votes. While Mr. Sawhney polled 11,784 votes, Mr. Kumar received 8,448 votes out of the 33,753 votes polled overall. The total electorate was 87,332 and poll percentage was recorded at 38.64.
The constituency was represented by Mr. Prem Nath Dogra of PP in 1957 and 1962 elections while as he won again in 1967 as a JS candidate. Mr. Abdul Rehman of BJS won the 1972 elections while as Mr. Ram Nath Balgotra of JP won the 1977 elections. Mr. Om Prakash of INC was elected from this constituency in 1983. Prof. Chaman Lal and Mr. Vaid Vishnu Dutt, both of BJP, won in 1987 and 1996 elections respectively.
73-Jammu West
This Assembly segment has 1,45,549 registered electorate out of which 74,383 are male and 71,166 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 161, as compared to 143 established in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma of INC was elected from here by securing 25,627 votes by defeating Mr. Virender Kumar Gupta, an independent candidate, by a margin of 7,923 votes. Mr. Gupta polled 17,704 votes. The total electorate was 1,63,689 and votes polled were 63,327. The poll percentage stood at 38.69.
Mr. Ram Chand of NC represented this constituency in 1957 and 1962 while as Mr. Ram Nath Mahajan of JS won the 1967 elections. Mr. Chaman Lal of BJS won this seat in 1967 while as Mr. Harbans Lal Bagotra of JP was elected in 1977. Mr. Rangil Singh of INC wrested the seat in 1983 and another INC candidate Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma won the 1987 elections from this constituency. Mr. Hans Raj Dogra of BJP won from here in the 1996 elections.
74-Bishnah
This Assembly constituency has 83,936 registered electorate out of which 42,328 are male and 41,608 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 83, as compared to 72 established in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mr. Ashwani Kumar Sharma, an independent candidate, was elected from here in 2002 by securing 17,961 votes and defeating Mr. Kamal Verma of NC by a margin of 4,663 votes. Mr. Verma received 13,298 votes. Out of the total electorate of 81,424, votes polled were 54,895. The poll percentage was recorded at 67.41.
This constituency was represented by Mr. Ram Piyara of NC in 1957 and Mr. Trilochan Dutt of the same party in the 1962 elections. Mr. Bhagat Chaju Ram of the Congress won this seat in 1967 and again in 1983 elections while as in the 1972 and 1977, Mr. Parmanand of INC was elected from this constituency. Mr. Parmanand again won in 1987 on NC ticket. Mr. Jagdish Raj Dubey of JD was elected from here in 1996.
75-R.S. Pura (SC)
This Assembly segment has 75,646 registered voters out of which 38,504 are male and 37,142 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 78, as compared to 73 established in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mrs. Suman Lata Bhagat of INC was elected from this constituency in 2002 defeating Mr. Romesh Lal Motton of NCP by a margin of 3,184 votes. Mrs. Bhagat polled 19,669 votes as against 16,485 received by Mr. Motton. The total electorate was 77,388 and the votes polled were 47,507. The poll percentage was recorded at 61.38.
R.S. Pura constituency was represented by S. Kulbir Singh of NC in 1957 while as another NC candidate Mr. Baghat Chajju Ram was elected in 1962 polls. S. Kulbir Singh again won in 1967 on a Congress ticket. Mr. Rangil Singh of the INC won the 1972 elections while as another INC candidate Mr. Janak Raj represented this constituency in 1977 and 1983 elections. Mr. Rangil Singh of INC won from here in 1987 elections while as Mr. Ram Chand of BSP represented R.S. Pura in 1996 Assembly elections.
76-Suchetgarh
Suchetgarh Assembly constituency has 58,238 registered voters out of which 28,691 are male and 29,547 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 60, as compared to 54 established in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mr. Gharu Ram of INC polled 11,344 votes in 2002 elections and defeated his nearest BJP rival Mr. R.S. Chib by a margin of 137 votes. Mr. Chib polled 11,207 votes. The total votes polled were 41,332 and poll percentage was recorded at 69.77.
The constituency was carved out on April 27, 1995 and went to polls for the first time in 1996. Mr. Chuni Lal of BJP won from here in 1996.
77-Marh
This Assembly segment has 66,313 registered electorate. Of these, 33,751 are male and 32,562 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 66, as compared to 64 established in 2002 Assembly elections.
NC candidate Mr. Ajay Kumar won 14,959 votes in 2002 elections and was elected from this constituency. He defeated Mr. Sukhnandan Kumar of BJP by a margin of 1,167 votes. Mr. Sukhnandan Kumar polled 13,792 votes. The votes polled were 46,935 and poll percentage stood at 68.82.
The constituency was represented by Mr. Guran Ditta Mal of NC in 1962 elections. He again won from here in 1967 on a Congress ticket. Mr. Sushil Kumar, another Congress candidate, won this seat in 1972 while as Mr. Tulsi Ram of JP was elected in the 1977 elections. Mr. Mula Ram of INC won both the 1983 and 1987 elections while as Mr. Ajay Sadhotra of NC won in 1996.
78-Raipur Domana (RS)
This Assembly segment has 90,520 registered voters out of which 46,348 are male and 44,172 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 83, as compared to 69 established in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mr. Mula Ram of INC won from here in 2002 defeating his nearest independent rival Mr. Bharat Bushan by a margin of 11,686 votes. Mr. Mula Ram polled 20,538 votes and Mr. Bharat Bushan received 8,852 votes out of the 47,230 votes polled overall. The total electorate was 77,364 and poll percentage was recorded at 61.05.
The constituency was carved out on April 27, 1995 and was represented by Mr. Sat Paul of JD in 1996 when it went to polls for the first time.

79-Akhnoor
This Assembly segment has 83,296 registered electorate. Of these, 41,655 are male and 41,641 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 93, as compared to 86 established in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mr. Madan Lal Sharma of INC was elected from here in 2002. He polled 17,102 votes and defeated his NC rival Mr. Govind Ram Sharma by a margin of 1,065 votes. Mr. Govind Ram polled 16,037 votes. The total votes polled were 58,242. The poll percentage was recorded at 71.24. By-election in the constituency was caused by the resignation of Mr. Madan Lal Sharma. It was held on 13th October, 2004. Mr. Sham Lal Sharma of INC was elected from here defeating Mr. Govind Ram Sharma, an independent candidate.
This constituency was represented by Mr. Sehdev Singh of PP in 1957 and Mr. Shiv Ram of NC in 1962 elections . Mr. Dharampal won from here in 1967, 1972, 1977 and 1983 elections on a Congress ticket. Mr. Govind Ram was elected in 1987 as an independent candidate while in 1996 he was elected from Akhnoor on NC ticket.
80-Chhamb (SC)
Chhamb Assembly constituency has 68,499 registered electorate for the 2008 polls out of which 32,796 are male and 35,703 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 67, as compared to 65 installed in 2002 Assembly elections.
Mr. Tara Chand of INC was elected from here in 2002 defeating his nearest NC rival Mr. Chhaju Ram by a margin of 10,334 votes. Mr. Chand polled 20,630 votes and Mr. Ram 10,296 out of 44,562 votes polled overall. The total electorate was 63,294 and poll percentage was recorded at 70.40.
Mr. Sat Dev of PP represented this constituency in 1957. Mr. Chaju Ram won from here as NC candidate in 1962 and on Congress ticket in 1967. Mr. Kanwar Devakar Singh of NC won this seat in 1977 while as an independent candidate Mr. Ram Nath was elected in 1977. Mr. Madan Lal of INC won this seat in 1983 and 1987 elections while as Mr. Tara Chand of the Congress was elected from here in 1996.
