| DEO discusses Election preparedness in Udhampur | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, Nov 2: Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Ajay Khajuria who is also the District Election Officer (DEO), today convened a meeting with Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Officers, District and Block Level Officers of various departments to discuss strategies for smooth and sucessful conduct of Assembly election-2008. SSP Udhampur, Surinder Gupta, Superintending Engineer, Hydraulic, Verinder Badyal, Addl. DDC, I. A. Zargar, Addl. Dy. Commissioner, N.I. Parrey, Chief Planning Officer, Assistant Commissioner, Revenue, Assistant Commissioner, Development, ARTO, Executive Engineer PHE, PWD, PDD, STD, District Social Welfare Officer, SDM Basantgarh, Tehsildars and BDOs were also present on the occasion. Threadbare discussions were held on various arrangements regarding deployment of staff, training and measures to provide infrastructural facilities required at each Polling station including the arrangements of boarding and lodging of Security personnel, transport, sanitation, drinking water and power supply. The arrangements for the stay of Presiding and Polling Officers were also discussed. The District Election Officer issued instructions to the Officers present in the meeting including district officers and officers assigned specific duties during the elections to adopt coordinated approach in ensuring the smooth conduct of elections in the district. He emphasized the need for strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct prescribed by the Election Commission of India. He further directed that no District Officer will leave the headquarter whether on leave or on duty without informing the DEO in writing and the staff working under them who are on leave or on duty out side the district be immediately recalled. He also called upon the concerned district officers to relieve the officials who have been deputed to work in the various cells constituted in connection with the election work and direct them to report to their respective election assignments before Monday viz November 3, 2008. The schedule for training of Master Trainers and for the subsequent preliminary training of polling staff at Block headquarters was also finalized. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized upon the need to make every eligible voter aware about the use of EVMs besides imparting training to staff at block level so that voter and polling staff could properly handle these machines on December 07, the date of polling in the district. Training of polling staff for migrants cells would also be completed soon, the meeting decided. . He also called upon the functionaries of Rural Development Department to conduct an extensive survey of each and every polling station in the rural areas in different constituencies of the district and furnish the physical status report in respect of basic facilities like electricity, water supply, civil repairs of sanitary fittings, door and windows etc on or before November 8, 2008 so that the polling staff may not face any difficulty on the polling day. The Deputy Commissioner directed all concerned to put in their best efforts to ensure that the requisite facilities are in place well in time for the smooth conduct of the Elections. Mr Khajuria also directed officers to arrange adequate transportation, communication facilities, uninterrupted power and water supply where ever necessary. Briefing the meeting regarding security arrangements, the SSP Udhampur said that adequate security arrangements have been made adding that additional Para-military personnel would be deployed well before the polling day covering each and every polling station of the district. |
