| Govt to crackdown on anti-poll campaigners | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 3: Leaders of mainstream political parties and the contesting candidates have decided to carry out door to door campaign for wooing voters following incidents of violence in several parts of Anantnag district on Sunday in which 12 people were injured. A senior PDP leader today said that even before yesterday's incidents "we had already decided to lay emphasis on door to door campaign." He said "our party candidates and the leaders have already started visiting villages where we interact with groups of people". He added "this experiment has been found better and more useful than organizing public rallies. During the interaction with people at village level, mainstream political leaders have been able to promote close rapport with the voters. The same policy was being adopted by the Congress and the National Conference. The leaders of these parties believe that separatists may try to kick up violence in order to create scare which was needed to ensure poor percentage of polling. But the Government circles on the other hand do not attach any importance to the yesterday's incidents of violence. They argue that such incidents were just mere aberrations, which is part of the pre-poll scene .A senior police officer said that such incidents were normal because of the tussle between those who are against the election and those who want to create space for their political activities by having jumped into the election fray. Asked whether such incidents could create scare among people who would be forced to keep away from the poll process, the police officer said that "incidents of stone pelting may not create major fear among people". He added "we have decided to deal firmly with those trying to disrupt the poll process and some of the anti-poll campaigners have been taken into custody and others too would be hauled up if they continue to create any law and order problem." |
