| Train to touch north Kashmir soon; Guv reviews progress | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 3: With the Railways becoming popular in Kashmir, the first red colour eight-coach Diesel Electric Multiple Unit train is all set to touch its North Kashmir destination of Baramulla soon. Governor, N N Vohra, reviewed the specific of the dream Rail Project, including water and power supply, approach roads, ticketing arrangements, establishment of food-outlets, security and other utility services, at a high level meeting here this morning. Vohra described the Railways in Kashmir as an extremely important project which could change the ethos of the Valley and enable human and economic activity round the year. He observed with satisfaction that the Valley train service had become very popular with the local populace, especially the school-goers and said that this momentum has to be maintained. He urged the operation of another unit for meeting the requirements of the service-class, at stipulated hours during the morning and evening, saying that the present schedule should not be disturbed, as the students, whom he described as 'foundation of the future' were finding the service convenient and beneficial. The Governor has been reviewing the minutest details of the Rail Project periodically and setting targets for its phased completion. The meeting also explored the possibilities of eliminating the obtaining Railway crossings to reduce chances of the accidents. It was revealed that out of 40 crossings, the Railways had already reduced the number to 6. A need was felt to bring down the number of such Crossings to zero level. Vohra called upon the Railways authorities to explore the ways and means to achieve this objective. S K Vij, Member Engineering, Railway Board, assured that the Railways Crossings would be totally eliminated if the State Government provided necessary support in draining out the rain water from the inundated areas during the monsoon. He said that the Railways have already spent Rs 700 crore extra on eliminating the Railway crossings on the rail track, so far. The meeting was informed that the approach road to the Baramulla Station has been completed while such roads to Pattan and Sopore Stations would be ready by later this month. The 199- kilometer Railway Project from Qazigund to Baramulla has 800 bridges and this section is estimated to cost Rs 2400 crores. The Qazigund-Baramulla section will have 15 stations and the Srinagar (Nowgam) Station will architecturally and aesthetically the most beautiful station of Indian Railways. The 66-kilometer Anantnag-Rajwansher Section was opened for the railway traffic on October 11 last. Among others the meeting was attended by Advisor to Governor, C Phunsog, Member Engineering, Railway Board, S K Vij, Principal Secretary to Governor, B B Vyas, Chief Administrative Officer, Northern Railways, R I C Gupta, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Masud Samoon, Chief Engineer, Northern Railways, B R Awasthy, Secretary R & B, Shailendra Kumar and IG Railways M A Anjum. |
