Rajouri’s 4 Assembly segments to vote on Nov 23rd
388 booths for Nowshera, Darhal, Rajouri & Kalakote constituencies

Rajouri district, comprising four constituencies of Nowshera, Darhal, Rajouri and Kalakote, is going to polls on 23rd November, 2008 during the second phase of J&K Assembly elections. The total electorate registered for 2008 electoral exercise in the district is 3,53,457, which includes 1,82,529 male and 1,70,928 female voters. The total number of polling stations being set up is 388, as compared to 337 set up in 2002 Assembly elections.

Nowshera
Nowshera Assembly segment has a total 84,657 registered voters, which includes 43,406 male and 41,251 female voters. The total number of polling stations to be set up in the constituency is 86, as compared to 80 in 2002. The total number of voters in 2002 was 88,099. Of these, 50,972 cast their vote and poll percentage was recorded at 57.84.
Mr. Romesh Chander of INC was elected from Nowshera in 2002 elections when he defeated his NC rival Mr. Radhay Sham Sharma by a margin of 4,474 votes. Mr. Chander polled 20,511 votes while as Mr. Radhay Sham Sharma received 16,037 votes.
Mr. Krishan Dev Sethi of NC represented this constituency in 1957 while Mr. Beli Ram won six Assembly elections on the trot from 1962 to 1987. Barring 1962 when he won on NC ticket, Mr. Beli Ram won all other elections as Congress candidate. Mr. Radhay Sham Sharma of INC was elected from this constituency in 1996.

Darhal
This Assembly segment has a total of 88,186 voters which includes 45,488 male and 42,698 female voters. A total 95 polling stations are being set up, as compared to 84 established in 2002 elections. The total number of voters in 2002 was 90,353 of which 42,115 cast their votes and poll percentage was recorded at 46.61.
Mr. Puran Singh, an independent candidate, was elected from here defeating his NC rival Ch. Liaqat Ali by a margin of 217 votes. While Mr. Singh polled 11,832 votes, Mr. Ali received 11,615 votes.
The constituency was represented by Mr. Mohammad Iqbal of NC both in 1957 and 1962 elections while as Mr. Mohammad Hussain of the Congress represented Darhal in 1967 Assembly polls. Mr. Abdul Rashid, again of the Congress, won in 1972 while as Mr. Mohammad Hussain of NC won from here in 1977. Mr. Bashir Ahmad of the INC won the seat on Congress ticket. However, Mr. Mohammad Hussain of NC again won in 1987 and 1996 elections.

-Rajouri
The total number of registered electorate for 2008 Assembly polls in the constituency is 1,05,271, which includes 54,323 male and 50,948 female voters. The polling stations to be set up in the constituency is 124 as against 100 set up in 2002 elections.
Mr. Mohammad Aslam of NC won this seat defeating his nearest INC rival Mr. Qamar Hussain by a margin of 2,678 votes. Mr. Aslam polled 11,933 votes while as Mr. Hussain received 9,255 votes. The total votes polled were 29,836 and poll percentage was recorded at 27.01.
The constituency was represented by Mr. Abdul Aziz Shawl of NC in 1957 and 1962 elections. Mr. Abdul Rashid of the Congress won this seat in 1967 while as Mr. Talib Hussain continuously represented the constituency in the 1972, 1977 and 1983 elections. Congress retained the seat again in 1987 when its candidate Mirza Abdul Rashid won from here. However, NC wrested the seat in 1996 when its candidate Mr. Mohammad Sharief Tariq was elected.

-Kalakote
A total of 75,343 voters are eligible to vote in the coming 2008 elections in Kalakote constituency. Of these, 39,312 are male and 36,031 female voters. The polling stations being set up in the constituency are 83, as against 73 established in 2002 elections.
Mr. Rachpal Singh of NC won this seat in 2002 elections defeating his INC rival Mr. Ashok Kumar Sharma by a margin of 1,200 votes. Mr. Rachpal Singh polled 19,324 votes while as Mr. Ashok Sharma received 18,124 votes. The total votes polled were 41,462 and poll percentage was recorded at 48.66.
The constituency was carved out on April 27, 1995 and went to polls for the first time in 1996. Mr. Ashok Sharma of Congress was elected from this constituency in 1996.
