| Over 2.59 lakh to vote in Poonch district | | 353 polling booths for Surankote, Mendhar, Poonch Haveli segments | | Poonch district, which comprises three constituencies of Surankote, Mendhar and Poonch-Haveli, will go to polls on November, 17th, 2008 in the first phase of J&K Assembly elections. A total of 2,59,580 voters have been registered in the district, out of which 1,32,107 are male and 1,27,473 female voters. The number of polling stations to be set up is 353, which is higher than the 346 set up during the 2002 electoral exercise.
Surankote Surankote Assembly segment has 84,969 registered electorate, which includes 43,442 male and 41,527 female voters. As many as 110 polling stations will be set up in the constituency, as compared to 107 established in 2002 Assembly polls. Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Shah of NC won this seat in 2002 defeating Mr. Mohammad Aslam of INC by a margin of 1,972 votes. Mr. Mushtaq secured 15,243 votes while as Mr. Aslam won 13,271 votes. The total votes polled were 33,254 out of the total electorate of 83,113. The poll percentage was recorded at 40.01. The constituency was represented by Ch. Mohammad Aslam of the Congress in 1977, 1983 and 1987 elections while as Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Shah of NC won from here in 1996.
Mendhar This Assembly constituency has a registered electorate of 77,853 in the coming 2008 J&K Assembly elections. Of these, 39,023 are male and 38,830 female voters. The polling stations to be established is 108 which is the same that were set up in 2002 polls. Mr. Javid Ahmad Rana of NC won the 2002 elections here when he defeated his nearest independent rival Mr. Rafiq Hussain Khan by a margin of 7,865 votes. Mr. Rana polled 24,530 votes while as Mr. Rafiq won 16,665 votes. Total votes polled were 47,729 and poll percentage was recorded at 60.00. The constituency was represented by Mr. Jamait Ali Shah of NC in 1957 and 1962 elections while as Mr. Mohammad Aslam of the Congress won this seat in 1967 and 1972 elections. Mr. Rafiq Hussain Khan was first elected in 1977 as an independent candidate while as in 1983 he was returned from Mendhar on NC mandate. NC retained the seat in 1987 and 1996 elections when its candidate Mr. Nissar Ahmad Khan won this Assembly constituency.
-Poonch-Haveli The Assembly segment of Poonch-Haveli has a total of 96,758 registered voters expected to vote in the 2008 Assembly elections. Of these, 49,642 are male and 47,116 female voters. The total polling stations to be set up are 135, as against 131 established in 2002 elections. Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Jan of NC was elected in 2002 polls when he beat his nearest INC rival Mr. Yashpal Sharma by a margin of 646 votes. Mr. Jan polled 27,364 votes and Mr. Sharma received 26,718 votes. The total votes polled were 57,712 and poll percentage was recorded at 60.73. Due to the demise of Mr. Jan, the Poonch-Haveli segment went for bye-poll on 12th December, 2007 in which Mr. Jehangir Hussain of INC was elected from this constituency when he defeated his nearest independent rival Mr. Yashpal Sharma. The constituency was represented by Master Ghulam Ahmad of NC both in 1957 and 1962 elections while as Mr. Mir Ghulam Mohammad of the Congress won from here in 1967 and 1972 elections. NC wrested the seat in 1977 elections and retained it in 1983 when its candidate Mr. Ghulam Ahmad was elected from here. The seat was won by an Independent candidate Ch. Bashir Ahmad in 1987 while as Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Jan of NC won this seat in 1996. |
