JAMMU, Nov 3: Hosts University of Jammu started their journey on bright note when the men team won the first round match and women got walkover in the North Zone Inter-University Table Tennis Tournament which got underway at the Indoor Hall of the University, here today.
While JU men defeated Gurukul University Haridwar 3-0, the women’s team got walkover Choudhary Charan Singh University, Hissar.
In fact, it was a day of walkovers after most of the participating Universities failed to report the venue. Out of 12 scheduled matches in men’s section, only four took place while six teams were awarded walkovers. Similarly, in women’s section, out of 11 matches scheduled for today, three were played. Four teams, including hosts University of Jammu, got walkover after the opponents failed to report.
Now, in the second round of the competitions tomorrow, JU women shall meet Punjab University Chandigarh while Men’s team will play against Dr RML Avad University.
The competitions were declared open by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof Amitabh Mattoo. He was introduced with the participating teams. Earlier, Director Physical Education, Prof Lokesh Verma presented welcome address. Prominent among others present in the inaugural function were Prof BPS Sehgal, Dean Academic Affairs; Prof G S Sambyal, Registrar; Dr Meenakshi Kilm, Director Colleges Development Council; Dr P S Pathania, Controller of Examination and Prof D S Bhau, Dean Students Welfare.
