| Congress list today | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 3: With barely a day left for filing nomination papers for the second phase of elections, the Congress is still lacking a consensus even as the All India Congress Committee’s screening committee discussed the names of probables and a formal announcement may be made tomorrow morning. Sources said that names of those discussed by the screening committee are almost final barring possibilities of a couple of changes particularly in Rajouri district. The meeting, in New Delhi, continued till late tonight but a formal announcement was still awaited. Former Chairman of the Pahari Advisory Board Shabir Ahmed Khan is being considered for Rajouri constituency. Rajouri and Kalakote emerged as two contentious constituencies delaying the decision. Party has also been considering name of former Member Parliament Chowdhary Talib Hussain for Rajouri constituency. In Kalakote, the opinion was divided between names of Ashok Sharma and Ravinder Sharma. Ravinder had been lobbying for a ticket from Nowshera but the party preferred to bank upon Dr Romesh Sharma who had contested and won 2002 election from this seat. Ravinder was therefore being considered for Kalakote from where Ashok Sharma had contested but lost 2002 elections. For Darhal constituency in Rajouri district, sources said, opinion is certain about Thakur Puran Singh who contested 2002 election as independent and later switched over to the Congress. In Kathua district, names of Kanta Andotra for Basohli, Prem Sagar Aziz for Bani, Girdhari Lal Chalotra for Hiranagar and Dr Manohar Lal for Billawar constituency were said to be certain. There was no final opinion about Kathua constituency which was in 2002 won by Babu Singh who contested as independent and later joined the Congress. Kishen Chand Bhagat is being considered for Chennani and Brij Mohan Sharma for Udhampur. Ajaz Ahmed Khan has been considered for Gool-Arnas. With possibility of changes at Kalakote and Rajouri constituencies, names of these candidates are likely to be announced tomorrow, said the sources. |
