| `Terror attacks show Pak situation` | | | AGENCIES NEW DELHI, Nov 4: India feels that the series of terror attacks in Pakistan has made the internal situation in that country "fragile" and hopes that it will not deteriorate. External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, while describing terrorism emanating from India's "neighbourhood" as the "biggest threat" to the global security, said New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation in Pakistan. "Our goal of a peaceful, stable and prosperous neighbourhood is predicated on enabling each of our neighbours to pursue the shared objective of development of our peoples," he said in a lecture on 'India's Security Challenges and Foreign Policy Imperatives' here last evening. "The series of terrorist attacks in Pakistan shows the fragile internal situation of that country, a situation we continue to monitor closely," Mukherjee said, adding India hoped that the situation in Pakistan will "not deteriorate". Contending that India's economic growth has provided increased opportunities for others to benefit by partnering it, he said, however, there was a challenge of persuading "our neighbours to put aside past mistrust and suspicions which have undermined development of harmonious relations..." Talking about Pakistan in this regard, he said India has been calling for removal of impediments to bilateral trade and economic relations, "which should not be predicated on resolving contentious political issues." Some progress has been achieved in this regard, he said while referring to the launch of cross-LoC trade recently. "We are, however, continuing to persuade Pakistan to grant overland transit to our goods as this can speed up stabilisation in Afghanistan," Mukherjee said. He said as Pakistan continued to deny transit facility to India, "we are exploring possibilities of transit for our goods to central Asia and Afghanistan through Iran." |
