| Vohra tells youth to think wide for better for avenues | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT AWANTIPORA, Nov 5: Jammu and Kashmir Governor, N N Vohra, today called for optimum use of technology for enhancing the scale, scope and quality of higher education, keeping in view the rapidly advancing frontiers of knowledge, the world over. In an interactive session with the faculty and students of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), here this afternoon, the Governor observed that the objective of the higher learning should not be merely to produce graduates; the emphasis must be on sharpening the intellectual faculties and knowledge of budding scholars. Describing IUST as a landmark 'green-field' initiative, Vohra suggested the University should have a vision which should be adequately reflected in a vision statement, which will be spelt out in a road-map for the IUST to endeavour towards becoming an effective and vibrant engine of social change. He hoped that the University would prepare itself for challenges of the 21st century and also prepare the youth to take up responsibilities in varied fields rather than merely hankering after jobs in the governmental sector. Vohra also stressed that the University must establish a first rate centre to provide regular coaching facilities for students, not only from within the University but also from the nearby areas, to prepare them for all the prestigious competitive examinations. For this purpose the State Government could consider providing suitable financial support to IUST The Governor asked the students to aim high and spread their wings across the world, in pursuit of academics and careers, rather than confining themselves in the four walls of their homes. "Life is full of challenges and has to be faced with fortitude and courage", he maintained and advised the youth to look beyond their home precincts for career advancement. Giving a presentation on the functioning of the University, Vice Chancellor, Prof Sidiq Wahid, informed the Governor that 895 students were pursuing different courses and their number was likely to cross 1000 mark next year. Earlier, the Governor went round various blocks of the University and interacted with the students and the staff. He went round the pre-fab units, raised recently with the financial assistance from the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. The Governor was informed that two additional blocks are presently under construction at a cost of Rs 1.26 crore while 17 pre-fabricated units have already been established. He was apprised about the hostel facilities being created for the boys and girls students. The Vice Chancellor said that the Jammu and Kashmir Bank is shortly opening an ATM in the campus for the facility of the students. |
