11/6/2008 12:01:34 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
NEW DELHI, Nov 5: Expressing concern over the arrest of a serving Army Lieutenant Colonel in connection with the Malegaon blast, Deputy National Security Adviser Shekhar Dutt on Wednesday said nobody should consider himself above the law.
"It is certainly a matter of concern ... Nobody should consider themselves above law," Dutt told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar on national security at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses in New Delhi.
"The police are going ahead with the investigation into the Malegaon blast on whatever leads they had got, Dutt, a former Defence Secretary," said.
"The levels at which the investigation is going on and whatever leads the police have got, they are following up..."
He also said the police have the right to detain anybody they find to be on the wrong side of the law. "To detain a person for questioning...Police have the rights," Dutt added.
The Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of the Mumbai Police had recently questioned Lt Col Shrikant Prasad Purohit, who was until recently posted in the Army Education Corps School in Pachmarhi in Madhya Pradesh studying Chinese.
Police had learned of Purohit's connections with an accused in the Malegaon blast, retired Major Ramesh Upadhyaya, and had sought permission to "interact" with him, to which the Army acceded last week.
Lt Col Purohit was sent to Mumbai to meet the ATS officers on a temporary posting and after questioning him for nearly three days, the ATS sought permission from the Defence Ministry to arrest him on Wednesday. He was produced before a Nasik court, which remanded him to police custody.
