| Even political minions stake claim for power | | | NIRBHAY JAMMUAL JAMMU, Nov 5: The season for making claims and counter claims has set in with pre-poll campaign in causing sleepless nights to political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir. All the six major mainstream political parties seem to be getting ready for forming the Government in the state.Ask any senior political leader he will not hesitate for a minute to shout loud"we will form the Government.” The mood in the Panthers Party is upbeat. Why? Its leaders claim that they will form the next Government. If one asks the Panthers leaders the reason for their optimism on forming the Government they have this much to say:People have tasted and tested the Governments run by the Congress, the National Conference and the PDP.People seem to have grown sick of such Governments and they want to taste the fruits of their good fortune under the Panthers Party Government. Though the Party President,Rajnath Singh, seems to have taken a realistic view of the pre-election scene in Jammu and Kashmir by saying that without the support of the BJP no party could form the Government in the state, his colleagues in Jammu and Kashmir are not prepared to accept anything short of winning simple majority in the 87-member Assembly.Their confidence has source in the way people, irrespective of caste, creed, colour and sex, supported the Sangarsh Samiti when it launched an agitation in Jammu against the land loss. The BJP claims that it was a major constituent of the Samiti and read peoples'support to the Samiti as their support for the BJP.When they are reminded that voices have started doing the rounds in Jammu that support to the Samiti had not to be construed to be support for the BJP in the election.People do say that the issue on which he Samiti launched the agitation is different from the election issue. This indicates that even if the BJP wins 30 out 37 seats in the Jammu region it falls short of14 seats. And similarly if the Panthers Party wins 20 out of 37 seats in the Jammu region it will be miles away from the Government. The leaders of these two organisations are not prepared to accept this analogy because they believe that they would win half a dozen seats from the Kashmir valley. If they do it it will be one of wonders of the world. As far as the two factions of the BSP are concened their leaders aim at formation of the Government in the state. If you ask the reason for it they would not feel shy in claiming that the BSP no longer is a party of the Dalits. They claim that they have enrolled a lare number of political activists from the upper cates and other communities. For the Congress, the PDP and the National Conference the story is different.leaders of these three parties are so sure of winning absolute majority in the Assembly that they have announced that they will go alone to the polls and form the Government without any support from any other group. The National Conference leadership has stated in advance that it would not form the Government in alliance with the Congress. The Congress has said that it will form the Government on its own.The PDP leadership is optimistic on winning more than six seats in the Jammu region which,it believes, holds the key to gaining power. If all of these parties are confident to form the Government which one is not?Well the question has no answer.I am told that such claims were part of the election strategy. This strategy resembles war.During previous wars between India and Pakistan the Indian troops would install a milestone on the border indicating Lahore 10 kms away and the Pakistani forces setting up mile stones depicting Srinagar five miles away.Hence do not blame political leaders. They have installed mile stones indicaing "we are near the power seat." |
