| Delimitation Commission begins work | | | Srinagar, Sept 13: The newly set up Delimitation Commission on administrative jurisdiction in Jammu and Kashmir began its work with a visit to Pulwama district.
The Commission members Mustaq Ahmad Ganai, Mumtaz Afzal and G A Shahbaz met a senior official of Pulwama district Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo yesterday and gathered details about Shopian Tehsil, which was upgraded to district status by the government in July this year, an official spokesman said here.
Kakroo informed the commission members that Shopian Tehsil consisted of five Niabats, six Girdawar circles, 43 Patwar Halqas and 231 villages with a population of 2.28 lakh and an area of 76,854 acres.
Kakroo also provided details of the existing infrastructural facilities available in Shopian and also projected the future requirements in terms of infrastructure and manpower.
Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad announced creation of eight new districts -- four each in Kashmir and Jammu provinces -- and 13 new tehsils as part of implementation of Wazir Commission report on the reorganisation of administrative units in the state.
Implementation of Wazir Commission report was part of the common minimum programme agreed upon by Congress, People's Democratic Party and other allies when it assumed office after 2002 assembly elections.
