Jammu seeks Centre’s intervention
10/19/2021 11:54:55 PM
The Jammu and Kashmir Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Dubai to develop the Industrial sector and various business enterprises in the Union Territory. The MoU is aimed at developing various economic activities including industrial parks, IT towers, multi-purpose towers, logistics, medical college, super specialty hospital and many other projects. The MoU has been signed at a time when the security situation in Kashmir is grim as the militants have killed eleven civilians, including non-locals, in the past few days. The investment is fraught with the risks. The J&K Government has described signing of the MoU with the Dubai Government as a historic moment. Foreign investments are welcome but that doesn’t mean that the J&K administration will ignore the natives.
The projects for which the MoU has been signed are not that extraordinary. If the local players could have been given a chance they too could have delivered as in the past locals have successfully completed many such projects and possess the expertise and the skill to work in Jammu and Kashmir. After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two union territories—things have become difficult for the local businessmen especially in Jammu region. The rules have been made stringent and outsiders are being preferred over the natives. The local businessmen are finding it hard to survive as the helmsmen are too busy with scoring points and seem least interested in empowering the locals. The businessmen from Jammu have tried knocking every door but they haven’t got any positive response from the people handling the J&K affairs. There are reports that a few businessmen are so fed up with the system that they are mulling to liquidate their assets and migrate to neighboring states so that they can make their ends meet and live a decent life. The Centre needs to take note of difficulties being faced by the local businessmen in Jammu region. It needs to intervene and tell the bureaucrats that they can’t trample Jammuties, who have stood with the country since 1947. It’s unfortunate that nationalist people of Jammu are not being dealt with fairly. People of Jammu have to be accommodated and listened to. They can’t be just sidelined and taken for granted.
