Drug abuse a big threat
10/22/2021 11:17:43 PM

The drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir is threatening the very vitals of the society. Many young people are falling prey to the drugs and are out to ruin their lives. The menace is sparing none.
The successive regimes couldn’t do much to prevent the youngsters from becoming drug addicts, even as a society we have failed to keep our generation next away from the drugs. The substance abuse by the youngsters has assumed a shape of monster.
If people don’t wake up we will end up losing the youngsters who are the future of our nation. Public pressure rides on the back of community participation and it is what drives change, and has been missing.
Studies that have been conducted during the past few years have revealed that many youngsters have died due to overdoses of drugs. This trend needs to be checked.
The erstwhile J&K government had framed a Drug de-addiction policy. It was said to be broader, encompassing means to effectively challenge various inter-linked aspects.
The government carried many awareness programmes but the zeal with which it was started faded. At almost all levels, the policy failed to meet the ends for which it was formulated and serious efforts, both at official and the societal levels are all but lacking.
The policy that was framed to curb the drug menace has remained confined to papers only.
As people we need to understand the problem in-depth to know the enormity.
Those who seek help to come out from the clutches of addiction seem to be few and the overall problem appears to be colossal.
There is a need for focused attention on how to rescue those who could be and also importantly how to wage a decisive war against the menace, targeting its roots.
The law enforcing agencies need to act tough against the drug peddlers. Until the traders selling this poison are not nailed down nothing will change. Parents need to keep a vigil over the activities of their wards.
Youngsters linked to the drug trade are more victims than offenders. Callousness of parents towards their children is a regrettable feature of the society.
Before blaming the youth for indulging in wrongful acts, we need to introspect and find out how careful we have been towards our children. It’s high time for us to pay some attention towards the youngsters and guide them so that they make their lives beautiful and prosperous.
