Champion DU men lose, women takes home coveted trophy

JAMMU, Nov 6: Defending champion, Delhi University men failed to retain the title while women salvaged pride winning the coveted trophy after a gap of two years in the North Zone Inter-University Table Tennis Championships organized by the University of Jammu at Gymnasium Hall on the campus, here today.
In the men’s final, played in the afternoon, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar defeated Delhi University 3-2. The results: Pyush bt Varun 11-5, 11-7, 11-9; Vandit lost to Sumal Jain 4-11, 11-4, 6-11, 10-12; Vikrant bt Ramit 11-9, 11-8, 3-11, 7-11, 11-6; Pyush lost to Suman Jain 6-11, 9-11, 4-11; Vandit bt Varun Anand 11-8, 11-9, 11-8.
In fact, the return of international player, Shubam Sharma of DU to participate in zonal ranking competitions yesterday was a major gain for Guru Nanak Dev University and loss for the reigning champions.
On the other hand, Delhi University women clinched the title after a gap of two years beating Punjab University Chandigarh 3-0. The results: Nikita Rautela bt Bhawana 11-4, 11-7, 11-4; Pallavi Prasar bt Sunanda 11-9, 11-5, 11-8; Shayanta Paul bt Dapinder Kour 18-14, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8.
“We have won the title without our best player, who could not accompany the team. Neha Aggarwal, who is an international player is presently playing in a zonal ranking tournament in Kolkotta,” captain of winning Delhi University women team, Pallavi Prasar told SAN.
Except for women’s section, that too at the semi-finals stages, there was hardly any upset. Both winner and runners-up teams of last year were beaten on way to the final this morning.
Meantime, in men’s hardliner for third place, Punjab University Chandigarh trounced Punjab Technical University Jalandhar 3-0. Third place in women’s section went to Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, who beat Punjabi University Patiala 3-1.
Earlier, in men’s semi-finals, Delhi University trounced Punjab University Chandigarh 3-1 while Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar outplayed Punjab Technical University Jalandhar 3-1.
In women’s semi-finals, defending champion, Punjabi University Patiala were beaten by Delhi University 3-0 while last year’s runners-up, GNDU Amritsar lost to Punjab University Chandigarh 1-3.
Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sudanshu Pandey was chief guest in the finals and valedictory function. He congratulated the winners and other participating teams for being in Jammu taking part in an event organized by the University of Jammu after a gap of 16 years. Speaking to the players, he said, “You are in a very beautiful state and do come some time. Hope you have spent a good time in the city. I would like to compliment the JU for taking lead and successfully holding the major event.”
Prominent among others present were Controller of Examinations, University of Jammu, Dr P S Pathania and Director Physical Education, Prof Lokesh Verma, Dr Meenakshi Kilm, Director Colleges Development Council and host of other dignitaries.
The event became a success after a team of dedicated officials, who put in best of their efforts under the guidance of senior table tennis coach of the University of Jammu, Ramesh Magotra.

The results: Men’s Harlinder: Manpreet bt Ritesh 3-2 (7-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10); Deepak bt Randeep 3-1 (11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8); Rachit bt Raghav 3-1 (11-8, 11-7, 11-13, 11-7). Women’s Hardliner: Ruchi Kalia bt Gurpal 3-1 (11-7, 11-4, 10-12, 11-6); Gagandeep lost to Manisha 1-3 (5-11, 11-5, 10-12, 7-11); Akansha bt Ankita 3-1 (11-5, 11-5, 4-11, 6-11, 11-8). Reverse singles: Gagandeep bt Gurpal 3-0 (15-12, 11-4, 11-3).
Men’s Semi-finals: GNDU Amritsar bt PTU Jalandhar 3-1: Pyush bt Raghav 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 12-10; Vandit bt Randeep 3-1 (11-5, 11-5, 7-11, 11-2); Vikrant lost to Ritesh 2-3 (11-8, 11-6, 6-11, 8-11, 8-11); Pyush bt Randeep 3-1 (7-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-4). Delhi University bt Punjab University Chandigarh 3-1: Varun Anand lost to Deepak 2-3 (10-12, 11-2, 13-11, 9-11, 6-11); Sunal Jain bt Kamaljeet 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-8); Ramit bt Rachit 3-1 (11-3, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8); Sunal Jain bt Deepak 3-2 (9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8).
