| Unsaid curfew keeps protesters indoors | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 6: Without formally declaring a curfew authorities today laid siege on entire Srinagar city and some other towns of Kashmir Valley as the Coordination of Committee –an amalgam of several separatist and other organizations –called for march to Jamia Masjid to protest against atrocities on Jammu Muslims in 1947 and formally launch the anti-election campaign. The restrictions were imposed by the authorities as the separatist Coordination Committee had announced that it would "formally" announce their anti-poll campaign and march towards Jamia Masjid in protest against atrocities against Muslims in Jammu in 1947 the wake of Partition. However, officials at the Police Control Room said no curfew has been imposed and that security has been beefed up in the city to prevent any law and order problem. This was another day in the Valley when people in most parts woke up to a curfew-like situation as troops were deployed in strength to thwart the planned protests. Reports said that a large number of troopers holding automatic weapons besides batons were guarding thestreets in Srinagar, strictly enforcing the restrictions though police claimed that no curfew had been imposed in any part of the valley today. Similar reports were received from other parts of the city and major towns. All roads leading to the historic Jamia Masjid in interior city were sealed and people heading to their workplaces were checked by security personnel. Chairman of the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq was placed under house arrest yesterday, while most of the leaders of the Coordination Committee and other separatists have been already arrested. In view of the restrictions imposed by the authorities, all shops, business establishments, schools and other educational institutions remained closed in the city and elsewhere in the Valley. |
