| Battle lines drawn in Rajouri | | PHASE: 81 in fray for 6 segments of Rajouri, Ganderbal | | HAMAAD SALIF Jammu, Nov 8: After withdrawal of nomination papers, battle lines are now clearly drawn in four constituencies of Rajouri district which has, so far, highest number of rebels from almost all parties. Despite persuasions from their respective party leadership, Chowdhary Talib Hussain of National Conference, Qamar Hussain of Congress and Mohammad Sharief Tariq of the Peoples Democratic Party are intact in the fray in Rajouri district as they have refused to pull out in any case. In neighbouring Darhal constituency, the Congress has two rebels –Mohammad Iqbal Malik and Masud Ahmed. Congress is reported to have made last minute efforts to change candidate in Kalakote constituency but it could not materialize. Sources said that the Congress leaders, Saif-ud-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad had summoned the official nominee Abdul Ghani Kohli and rebel candidate Ashok Sharma but both refused to pull out of contest. On second thoughts Congress had tried to restore party ticket to Ashok Sharma but at this stage Kolhi refused to withdraw. Now Kalakote is all set for a triangular contest between Rashpal Sharma Singh of National Conference, AG Kohli of Congress and the Congress rebel Ashok Sharma. In Rajouri constituency it is going to be a multi-cornered contest between independent heavy weights and official nominees of Congress, National Conference and BJP. In Darhal the contest appears to be triangular between Choudhary Zulfikar Ali of Peoples Democratic Party, Liyaqat Hussain of National Conference and Puran Singh of Congress. Following withdrawal of candidature by 6 independent contestants, a total of only 59 candidates have remained in poll fray in four assembly segments of Rajouri district that will go to polls on November 23. As many as 3 candidates have withdrawn their candidature in Kalakote assembly segment apart form 1 each in Nowshera, Darhal and Rajouri, the highest number of 23 contesting candidates are in Rajouri segment followed by 13 in Kalakote, 12 in Darhal and 11 in Nowshera assembly segment. Today was the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Those who withdrew their candidature include Audhya Nath (Nowshera), Karamatulla (Darhal), Ghulam Ahmed Dar (Rajouri) and Junaid Hussain, Mahmmod Rafiq and Mohammad Farid of Kalakote assembly segment. All of them had filed their nomination as independents. Meanwhile, on the last day of withdrawal of candidature, 22 candidates are left in fray in Ganderbal and Kangan constituencies after withdrawal of nominations by three candidates today There are 12 candidates in Ganderbal constituency while 10 candidates would try their fortune in Kangan constituency. The contestants are Altaf Ahmed, (NC) Abdul Rashid Ganie, (NPP) Mohammad Sultan Lone, (JP) Nazir Ahmed Raina (BJP), Rafiq Ahmed (Ind), Ghulam Ahmed Rather, (INC), Bashir Ahmed Mir (PDP), Shabir Ahmed (ANC), Mohammad Amin Sofi (Ind), Ghulam Mustafa Kasana (BSP), Syed Ali Mohammad Shah( Ind), Omar Abdullah (NC), Farooq Ahmad (NPP), Ali Mohammad Baba (BSP), Farooq Ahmed (DNP), Qazi Mohammad Afzal (PDP), Abdul Rashid Sheikh (BJP), Bashir Ahmed Bhat (RJD), Sheikh Ishfaq Ahmed (INC), Nazir Ahmad Lone (ANC) Ghulam Hassan Dar (BDP)and Nisar Ahmed Bhat (Ind).
