Sofia Sharma bags first slot in pre-final symposium on Moulana Azad

Jammu, Nov 8- Sixty seven students took part in the pre-finals of provincial level symposium on the topic "Moulana Abdul Kalam Azad's crusade for Education" held at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Shastri Nagar here today.
Secretary School Education G A Peer presided over the function while the Director School Education Zahida Khan was the guest of honour.
Addressing the participants, Peer said that Moulana Azad blended in himself the best traditions of oriental and accidental philosophies. He was champion of Hindu- Muslim unity and a staunch supporter of united India, he added.
Zahida Khan who also spoke on the occasion congratulated students for their excellent preparation at short notice. She said that only six students have to be selected but that in no way, be little the efforts of other participants. They need to put in a bit of more work and to improve their pronunciation.
In the pre final contest Sofia Sharma bagged first position, while Taslima Sheikh and Priyanka Koul bagged 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
A pre-final inter-college provincial level symposium on the theme ‘Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Crusade for Education, was held in the auditorium of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu here today.
Mean while ,the symposium was organized by the Higher Education Department as a part of National Education Day celebrations to be observed on November 11, 2008.
On the occasion, Director Colleges, N. D. Wani was the chief uest while Principal of the College, Prof. Nailini Kohli presided over the function.
Addressing the gathering,Wani threw light on the life of great freedom fighter, an eminent educationist and first Union Minister of India for Education. He said that the main purpose of the function is to commemorate the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He informed that Mr. Azad was born on November 11, 1888 in Mecca. His forefather’s came from Heart (a city of Afghanistan) in Babar’s days.Azad was a descendent of a lineage of learned Muslim scholars or Maulanas. His father’s name was Maulana Khair-ud-din and his mother was the daughter of Sheikh Mohammad Zaher Watri.
In the pre-final competition, about 36 students of different colleges of Jammu province participated. Out of them, 6 best speakers from colleges were selected for final competition, which is scheduled to be held on November 11, 2008 at Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu where Advisor to Governor, Dr. S. S. Bloeria will be the chief guest.
Among others, Cordinator, Internal Quality of Assurance Cell, Prof. Hemla Aggarwal, Principal Government Degree College, Samba, Prof. Ajeet Angral, students, teaching and non-teaching staff members were also present on the occasion.
