| SAYSS must rise to occasion | | | Vikram Gour
The people of Jammu region had taken the land row of Sri Amarnath Shrine as a God given gift to the people of Jammu to unite against the injustice and discrimination being done by the Kashmiri leadership and the central-leadership for the last over 60-years, without break, irrespective of the fact which party ruled the state. The act of withdrawal of land for temporary use of the pilgrims via Baltal route was so unpredictably, unjustly and unconstitutionally carried out that the people of the Jammu region felt that this was time to revolt and if they do not revolt now the coming generations will not forgive them for their failure to fight. Some wise men of the region irrespective of cast, colour, creed, religion, party (leaving a few) decided to unite to fight. Sri Amarnath Yatra Sanrash Samiti (SAYSS) came into being. Wise men from all sections of the society lawyers, Industrialists, businessmen, even the small rariwalas, big and small transporters all came together and decided to launch a movement against the government order. The movement spread from cities to villages and to the remotest corners of the Jammu Region. People of all ages old, young, ladies, children all came with one slogan ‘Bum Bum Bola’.Jammu Region appeared to be one right from Pooch to Doda and Kathua to Banihal (with few exceptions). Jammu people were happy that for once a chance has come for people to unite and fight the Kashmiri domination. The agitation was successfully carried out by the collective cooperation of over 34-different groups, parties, Associations, Organisations for over 60-days. The Governor had to bow under people’s pressure. The land was restored. Now since the governor’s rule had been imposed 'by courtesy Gulam Nabi Azad' the last Congress Chief Minister and the elections were due in the state. The general public of Jammu Region had genuinely expected that this SAYSS will convert itself into Jammu Sangarsh Samiti to fight for the restoration of legitimate rights of the Jammu Region including parity in assembly seats, services, development works, allocation of funds etc and to do this they will effectively participate or help unite parties interested in fighting elections to unite for 'Jammu cause' and win maximum assembly seats for the Jammu region to force their demands. The public had decided to vote for Samiti which fought so valiantly against the Kashmiri separatists’ conspiracy to deny space for a sacred cause. Somehow, the leaders of SAYSS, for reasons best known to them, insisted that their agitatation was only limited to restoration of Land for temporary use of Yatrees visiting Amarnath shrine and they will not carry forward the movement to fight for any other political cause. In the meantime the elections to the J&K Assembly have been announced. The national level parties e.g. congress and BJP and the state level parties including N.C, PDP and Panthers etc were the obvious parties to fiht the elections. But there are many other parties, groups, and oranisations which spring out at the time Elections to grind their personal axe and also join the fray to try their luck or to spoil the genuine representation of the public. They do more damage to the public interest of choosing a genuine representative. And as a result the public is represented in the assembly by someone who has the least public support and serves only his personal or his party interest. For such a person the public who elects him has no value. The common man who participated in the SAYSS movement for upholding the rights of the people of Jammu region is now disappointed and disgusted to see all those elements who have in the past ruined 'Jammu cause' have again come out in the open to crush the aspirations of the people of Jammu to put up a united front to uphold the honour and dignity of this region. While the ASYSS has made no effort to unite various groups to fight under one banner to win maximum seats in the assembly those who during the agitation swore by Jammu and have no chances, have come out to divide the voters to allow once again the same parties to win who have in the past 60-years played havoc with the people of Jammu Region irrespective of religion, cast or creed. These ill-advised/ill-conceived groups and parties have refused to unite and are entering the election fray independently in the name Jammu Region to divide the voters for the benefit of the enemies of this unfortunate Region. One can only hope and pray that better sense prevails upon these well-wishers of Jammu and they put up only one winning candidate against those who are responsible for unfortunate position in which Jammu Region is placed now.
