| PDS needs overhauling: Tarigami | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 9: "In the name of economic liberalization program pursued vigorously by successive governments at the Centre, government licenses have been abolished for virtually everything, now only the poor need a license to qualify as poor," said M.Y. Tarigami State Secretary CPI (M) while addressing an election rally at Ashmuji in South Kashmir. Tarigami said that at a time when inflation is touching skies and purchasing power of a common man is at its lowest ebb, the absence of essential commodities at government run ration depots has created a food crisis situation in the State. "The poor are compelled to buy ration from markets on exorbitant rates and PDS has failed them in mitigating their sufferings," Tarigami added. Stressing on the need for a review of the Public Distribution system, Tarigami asked the government to take effective measures including rationing during situation of scarcity, maintaining price stability, keeping a check on private trade and raising the welfare of the poor by providing basic foods to the vulnerable population at reasonable prices to ensure that PDS caters to the vital food needs of a common man. Senior CPI (M) leaders Mohammed Amin Dar, Abdul Hamid Wani and Mohammed Afzal Parray also addressed the rally. |
