| Slow construction work on Trauma hospital irks residents | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGR, Nov 9: The delay in the completion of the Trauma Hospital on Baramulla- Srinagar highway at Pattan is proving a cause of loss of many precious lives in the area in case of any accident, people of the area alleged. A cross section of the inhabitants of the area alleged that the unnecessary delay in the construction of the hospital meant to treat mostly accident victims on the highway and other roads has resulted in great inconvenience to the patients. The hospital which was scheduled to be completed in October this year is far from being completed. "The delay in the construction of the hospital has consumed many precious lives so far as the accident victims do not get the necessary treatment before their shift to Srinagar hospitals. Had the hospital construction gone according to the schedule, it would have provided a great deal of relief to the people of the area," Mohammad Lateef, a pharmaceutical company manager from Pattan, said According to reports the land for the Trauma hospital was purchased in 2002 and in 2005 then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed laid the foundation stone of the hospital and Rs 1.17 crore were allocated for its construction. Sources in PWD Baramulla reveal that only one crore rupees have been spent so far. When people of the area held protests continuously, the then Finance Minister, Tariq Hamid Qarra held an Awami Darbar and put October 2008 as the deadline for the completion of the hospital. Later Executive Engineer PWD (TT division) assured Finance Minister that one storey of the hospital will see completion in September this year, people said. However due to the premature end of the coalition government, the construction work of the hospital took a back seat and today even that one storey is not complete. "We are perplexed as to when this hospital, which has an immense importance due to the number of accidents occurring on the highway, will see its first patient. PWD is playing dilly dally tactics and people are the ultimate sufferers," Abdul Aziz, a bus driver from Palhalan said. Inhabitants of Pattan and surrounding areas, who now are fed up with the snails pace of work exhibited by PWD, want the construction work to be consigned to JKPCC which they believe may construct the hospital in time. However, Dr. Muzafar, Director Health Services Kashmir, said, "I have taken up the issue with R&B division and in next couple of days we will come up with some concrete decision in this regard." |
